The chestnut Dutch warmblood stallion Riant has passed away. The 17-year old stallion was found dead in his stall at Deligh Stables in Saupsdorf, Germany, on Tuesday morning 16 May 2015.
A necropsy revealed that Riant died of a ruptured aorta. The stallion was owned by Frank van Kasteren and Samantha Post.
Riant was bred by P.P.W Janssen in Overloon, The Netherlands. He was by Jazz out of the keur mare Kantira (by Julia Mariner xx x Ramiro Z).
Riant's claim to fame came when he was a young sport horse. Known as Wijdewormer's Riant, the chestnut stallion competed at the 2003 World Young Horse Championships under Anke ter Beek. He was further trained and competed up to small tour level by Delphine Meiresonne, Marlies van Baalen, Annemiek Vincourt, and Corina van den Bunt.
The stallion sold to Delight Stables in Germany in 2014 and was approved for Sachesen and Brandenburg breeding in January and February 2015. Riant competed briefly in Germany under Samantha Post. She showed him at M-level at the local shows in Lungkwitz, Neu-Krauscha and Zittau in the spring of 2014.
Riant was never a very popular breeding stallion and has only one licensed son (Happy Star SVZ). His most famous offspring include Belgian Jitske Bosschaerts' young riders horse Whitney (by Riant x Lester) and Miranda Rongen's 2009 World Young Horse Championship ride Zico.
