Jayne Turney and the 6-year old Westfalian gelding Penhaligon's Jupiter took the British young horse world by storm, winning the 2016 British Winter Indoor Championships at Novice Open level. Her stellar mount, who was scouted for owners Shirley and David Rixon in Germany by agent Peter Tomlinson, has been submitted to the World Class Dressage Equine Pathway Programme.
Penhaligon's Jupiter is a 2010 born Westfalian, bred by Adolf-Theo Schurf and sired by Sternberg out of Lifetime (by Laudabilis x Worldchamp x Fidelio).
The dark bay gelding was owned in Germany by Count Karl-Hubertus Beverförde and discovered by British agent Peter Tomlinson of Findadressagehorse.com and his business partners for the Rixon couple one year ago. The horse was originally named Penhaligon's Juniper (a perfume for men), but got erroneously registered with British Dressage as Penhaligon's Jupiter.
The gelding was first competed by Luisa Beverförde, before Henrike Horstmann took over in 2015 and showed him at L-level. Penhaligon's Jupiter was originally bought as an investment project, but after he moved to Great Britain in September 2015 the Rixons fell in love with this pocket rocket. Shirley allocated the ride to 34-year old Jayne Turney.
Buckinghamshire rider Turney got "PJ" in her barn 15 months ago and she is still amazed every day by the quality he offers.
"He is an extraordinary little horse and I feel privileged every time I sit on him," Turney told Eurodressage. "His trot work is probably one of his best attributes along with his willingness to learn and perform. He is always so on-side when we are training and feels like he gives even more at competitions (especially those with a big atmosphere). He finds most of his work quite easy he just needs to get stronger physically and get more established at the more advanced work."
Less than half a year together, the pair won the 2016 British Winter Indoor Championships in April 2016 at Novice Open level. They scored 76.09% almost 3% clear of second-placed Lucinda Elliot on Mount St John Furstin Fugger. The pair also contested the British National Young Horse Final for 6-year olds in Hartpury and finished third.
Turney got the ride on PJ after a phone call from Shirley Rixon, who wanted to make sure that their horse had the right support and back up behind him. The pair trains once a month with Jayne's personal friend and trainer, double Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin, who was also hands on at the British Winter Nationals to coach them to victory.
"I have been training with Charlotte more and more over the last 3 to 4 years since following my dreams and concentrating on dressage," said Turney. "I try to get there as often as I can with PJ and find her help invaluable. "
Jayne hopes to carry on training and working Penhaligon's Jupiter up the levels towards Grand Prix. "I'm looking forwards to our journey together," she added.
Penhaligon's Jupiter has been submitted to the World Class Dressage Equine Pathway Programme. The programme was launched by the British Equestrian Federation in 2007 to provide a method of identifying support through training to elite young horses that show an indication of the necessary qualities to represent Great Britain and ideally medal at future Championships and Olympic Games.
