The 22-year old Dutch warmblood licensed stallion Negro has been proclaimed KWPN Stallion of the Year at the 2017 KWPN Stallion Licensing in 's Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, on Saturday evening 4 February 2017.
This year the KWPN breed society decided to scratch the honour for the KWPN Horse of the Year, which was decided by popular and jury vote, and replace it with the KWPN Stallion of the Year distinction.
Negro is by Ferro out of keur mare Fewrie (by Variant x Gondelier). The black stallion is bred by Mr. Borgers from Lunteren and was originally named Novabor. He is owned by Gert Jan van Olst. Under Anne van Olst, he had a very successful but very short show career in dressage due to an injury. He won the 2000 and 2001 KWPN Stallion Competition in 2000 and 2001 and was the best performing Dutch horse at the 2001 World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden, Germany.
In 2009 the KWPN society proclaimed Negro keur stallion. His most successful offspring is of course double Olympic champion Valegro, as well as Grand Prix horses Nintendo (Charlotte Jorst), Alfranco (Gilian Davison), Vorst (Anne van Olst), Unico G (Anne Marek) and Numberto (Severo Jurado Lopez.
Negro was honoured during his son Valegro's Dutch farewell ceremony, but the stallion was not present duroing the show.
