Thieu van Gansewinkel, father to Dutch 5* judge Mariette Sanders-van Gansewinkel, has passed away at age 81.

Van Gansewinkel was a driving force for the development of dressage competition sport in The Netherlands.

He was the man behind the NVDR (Dutch Society for Dressage Riders), which was originally named the VVDR (Society for Dressage Riders). The society promoted the interests of Dutch dressage riders competing at a national level.

When the Dutch equestrian societies merged into the Dutch Equestrian Federations (KNHS) on 1 January 2002 as it is known now, Van Gansewinkel's NVDR turned into the ZZGP foundation for FEI level dressage riders until 2007. He worked as a committed show secretary and manager.

Van Gansewinkel also served as an aid in the team selection process, assisting Dutch team trainer Jurgen Koschel in the early 2000s.
