Joanna Robinson and her 12-year old Oldenburg stallion San Coco di Amore have launched themselves as shootings stars of Finland by scoring two seventy percentage marks on their international Grand Prix debut at the 2020 CDI Cascais on 28 February - 1 March 2020.
A year into their partnership, Robinson and San Coco di Amore (by San Amour x Cheenook x Carprilli) debuted at Grand Prix level in Cascais, Portugal, to post 70.152% for third place in the Grand Prix and 70.787% for second place in the Special. They immediately promoted themselves as one of the high scoring pairs for Finland.
"Coco felt really nice in Cascais," Robinson told Eurodressage. "He was quite nervous in the stables prior to the competition so I was happy how he relaxed to the tests."
"He’s quite hot and sensitive," she continued. "He’s got three good gaits and very much power in him. I love riding him and it feels like I’ve really got him trusting me now. In the warmup he can get quite stressed by the other horses so I need to look out for that not to happen."
The country has an individual starting place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, obtained in 2019 by Henri Ruoste. The actual spot will be allocated to the best scoring rider with the fittest horse in June.
Future Star in San Coco di Amore
Robinson, who is based in Scandinavia in summers and Malaga, Spain, in winters, purchased San Coco di Amore in October 2018 from Irina Dietrich. The horse was campaigned in Germany at developing GP level by Renate Gohr-Bimmel.
The pair made its international show debut in March 2019 at the CDI Cascais at small tour level and finished second four times in two weeks of CDI competition at that venue. In April they rode at the CDI Alter do Chao, followed by the CDI Companhia das Lezirias in May. Over the summer they worked on the Grand Prix movements, to showcase their developing last weekend in Cascais.
Germany - England - Spain
The 30-year old Joanna Gadd Robinson spent her teenage years training in Germany after which she moved to England, where she started a family and put horse riding on the back burner. After getting two children - Victor (2.5) and Vivia (4) - she took up riding again in October 2017.
Robinson made her international debut as a rider at the 2018 World Young Horse Championships in Ermelo with the then 6-year old Fred the Red (by Franziskus x Florestan). Her CDI Grand Prix debut was in 2019 in Sevilla on the 15-year old Westfalian Riccardo L (by Rheingau x Larome).
"Riccardo L is still mine, but my aunty is riding him now. He was my first Grand Prix horse and will always stay in our family. Fred I’ve sold."
She runs a professional stable Vix Equestrian at her property "Finca Falcon" near Malaga and is trained by Danish Morten Thomsen.
