Grönwohldhof on fire

In the night of 21 May 2020, the hay barn at Gestüt Grönwohldhof caught fire and the inferno spread over the equestrian centre.

Grönwohldhof near Hamburg was the former property of Oldenburg horse breeder Dr. Otto Schulte-Frohlinde. He settled there in the 1970s and it became the home of legendary stallion Donnerhall. Herbert and Karin Rehbein, as well as their protege in the 1990s, Kristy Oatley, had their base there.

Since 2012 equestrian property is now a brood farm owned by industrial baker Manfred von Allwörden, who focuses on jumper horse breeding. Sri Lanka jumping rider Mathilda Karlsson  is now based there.

The hay barn caught fire two days ago and spread over several buildings. The fire department received a phone call at 2.30 AM and immediately went to the scene. Seventy firefighters worked hard to extinguish the inferno. Twenty-six horses were rescued, but for two all help came too late.
