Niana V.O.D. (by Desperado x Jazz) has been named the champion of the 2021 KWPN Mare Championships in Ermelo, the Netherlands, on Friday 13 August 2021.

A group of 14 dressage bred mares was invited to the champion ring to compete for the most prestigious title to be won by 3-year old KWPN mares. Thirteen of them were ranked.

“We had a large group of dressage mares today at the National championships and the quality was high level. The fact that we invited 14 mares to the final signals that too,” said Marian Dorresteijn, who made up the judges committee together with Bart Bax and Toine Hoefs. They inspected 50 mares in Ermelo.

Niana V.O.D. was named the champion. Bred by Ad van Os, the chestnut is by Desperado out of Zoriana (by Jazz) and the full sister of the licensed stallion Mowgli V.O.D.. She was already the winner of the mare inspection in Brabant and now added the national title to her list of achievements.

“This is a very youthful and appealing mare that collects and extends with great ease. She stands out in her self-carriage and engaged hind leg. A champion in every aspect," said Marian Dorresteijn.

Nouvelle Feniz Texel (by Toto Jr out of out of Feniz Texel (by Negro)) was named the reserve champion. Bred by Wim van der Lined, this mare sold at the 2018 Prinsjesdag Foal Auction for 85,000 euro to Aaliyah Dantism. On the KWPN results sheets, though, this mare was listed as owned by the breeder.

"“This Toto Jr-daughter has a great model and lots of presence. She impresses with her good trot in hand and cantered for 90 points at the studbook inspections. She was also convincing in the walk," Dorresteijn explained.

The third placed mare was Nashville DS (by Painted Black out of Keyveniz Texel (by Negro)), bred by D. Staller and owned by D. Broekema.

This is a beautiful, modern mare that moves light-footedly," the judges stated.
