The Portuguese equestrian federation (FEP) has announced the team that will represent Portugal at the 2022 World Championships Dressage in Herning on 6 - 11 August 2022.

Team trainer Kyra Kyrklund and the FEP technical staff made their choice based on the performances and fitness of the combinations this show season.

The team in Herning will be assisted by Kyrklund, chef d'equipe António Frutuoso de Melo, and team veterinarian Bruno Miranda.

Representing Portugal in Herning are:

  • João Moreira on Zonik Hit (Old, 2013, Zonik Hit x Diamond Hit) owned by Marta Moreira
  • Maria Caetano on Fénix de Tineo (Lusitano, 2010, Rubi x Oheide) owned by Yeguada Finca Tineo
  • Martim Meneres on Equador (Lusitano, 2009, Peralta Pinha x Novilheiro) owned by Rodrigo D`Orey Meneres
  • Vasco Mira Godinho on Garrett (Lusitano, 2011, Único x Go-Go) owned by Team Rubi Sarl

Biggest absentee from the team is 2021 Olympic pair Rodrigo Torres on Fogoso Horsecampline. The pair showed at the 2022 World Cup Finals in April and last competed at the 2022 CDIO Aachen in Germany. Torres and his team have decided to skip Herning and save his horse for Olympic selection in 2023 towards Paris 2024.

"We opted to not expose Fogoso to the big effort that the WEGs would represent for him, specially after the great tests he delivered in Aachen, and 4 years competing at GP level non stop.," said Torres.  "Our next big goal is Paris 2024, and we know that the biggest chance for Portugal is to qualify during 2023 in the European Championships. 2023 will be a very intense year of competition, in which we hope to contribute again to a Portuguese Team olympic qualification. So we would like to give Fogoso some time to rest, and live his normal horse life at home before we start again."
