The 4-year old Nashville WS, the 5-year old My Blue Hors Santiano, and the 6-year old Lightning Star became the winners of the 2022 Pavo Cup Finals, the KWPN young horse championships, which were held in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on 4 - 6 August 2022.

The Format

The highest scoring horses of the spring and summer qualifiers across the country were invited to the 2022 Pavo cup semi-finals. No less than 61 four-year olds, 49 five-year olds, and 26 six-year olds competed in the semi-finals.

After the semi finals 19 four-year olds, 21 five-year-olds, and 10 six-year olds moved on to the Finals, which consists of two rounds. A first round in which the horse is presented again by the rider and assessed on gaits and harmony by a judges' panel of three.

Finally the three highest scoring horses, with their points of the semi-finals and round 1 of the finals totalled, get test-ridden by a guest judge rider.

This year's Pavo Cup judges for the finals' rounds were Sven Rothenberger, Bart Bax, and Eva Möller. The latter served as test rider.

4-YO: Nashville WS

Femke de Laat and M. te Brake's Nashville (by Secret x Jazz) were a league of their own, winning all three rounds. They bested the field in the semi-finals with 91.9 points and topped the board in the first round of the finals with 91.20. He became the only horse to score over 90 points in the first two rounds. Test rider Eva Möller decorated the horse with a 10 for rideability and potential which made Nasville the sovereign winner with 283 points total.

"Already by watching him from the judges' table I found him the best horse. The feeling under saddle is probably even better," said Eva Möller.

Judith Ribbels and her home bred mare Nanny Mc Phee (by Vitalis x Sorento) were second in the semi-finals (89.80) and third in the first final round (86.40)%, but they bumped their total to 271 points after Möller gave the liver chestnut 95 points after having test ridden her.

Edith Chardon, sister to European four-in-hand driving champion Bram Chardon, navigated Stal Brinkman and Jacques Maree's liver chestnut stallion Dutch Dream (by Dream Boy x Furst Romancier) to a third place with 264.20 points. The stallion was third in the semi-finals (89.80) and fourth on the first final round (84.40), but got 90 from Möller to finish in the bronze medal position.

5-YO: My Blue Hors Santiano

In the 5-year old division Renate van Uytert-Van Vliet and My Blue Hors Santiano (by Sezuan x Romanov) climbed the board from a third place in the semi-finals to a second in the first final round, and to the victory after Eva Möller test rode the horse. Bred by Straight Horse in Denmark and owned by the Danish Blue Hors stud, the licensed stallion scored 85.00 and 85.60 under Van Uytert, while Möller rewarded the stallion with 95 points for rideability and potential.

"When I first saw him I wondered how he would get into the connection, but the feeling on him is really top. He's soft in the contact and nice to ride," said Eva, who for years has ridden sire Bordeaux for Renate's husband Joop van Uytert.

Saskia van Es and the gelding Montrachet (by Toto Jr x Tuschinski), bred and owned by Adri Van Erp, became the runners-up. The horse was second in the semi-finals with 85.20 points, led the first final round with 87, and then dropped to an overall second place with a total of 262.2 points after receiving 90 points from Moller. "He's very willing to work and gives a good feeling. At the moment there is a difference between the left and right lead in canter," Möller commented.

Former Dutch Grand Prix team rider Danielle Heijkoop placed third aboard Stal Brouwer, her own and Joop van Uytert's gelding Mac Toto USB (by Toto Jr x Jazz). The black won the first round with 87.20 points, dropped to fifth in the first final round with 83.8 and then got 80 points from test rider Möller. He finished on 251 points.

6-YO: Lightning Star

The winner of the 6-year old division was a familiar face: Lightning Star (by Floriscount x De Niro) under Kirsten Brouwer. The silver medalists of the 2021 World Young Horse Championships dominated on home ground and won the Pavo Cup title. The pair led the semi-finals with 87.6 points and placed second in the first round of the finals with 86.4 points. Test rider Eva Möller preferred her of the three highest scoring horses and rewarded the liver chestnut with an 95 points for rideability and potential. They finished on a winning total of 269.0 points. Lightning Star is bred by Indonesian Titan Wilaras and owned by Rosanne and Robert van Stuivenberg in partnership with the rider.

"She's a real powerhouse. You don't need to activate her hind leg, she has a lot of activity on her own. She has a lot of talent for the future," Möller stated.

The runner-up was Spaniard Curro Benitez Sanchez aboard the liver chestnut Lord Platinum (by Ferguson x Bretton Woods). This horse is also bred by Titan Wilaras and owned by E. Bakker-Laplooi and Kirsten Beckers. The duo was fourth in the semi-finals (84.0) and won the first round of the finals (87 points). Test rider Möller rewarded the gelding with 90 points which put him in second place overall with 261 points. "His lateral movements are very nice, which offers a lot of perspective for the future," Eva commented.

The third place went to Megan Mühlebach aboard her own gelding Let's Play (by Franklin x OO Seven), who is bred by Dutch horse dealing family Fiechter. They were seventh in the semi-finals with 82.4 and moved to a third spot in the first final round with 85 points. Möller gave the gelding 90 points which led to a third placing total of 257.4 points.
