The 4-year old Mochyndaear Dragonfly in Amber, the 5-year old Tjiesto LH, and the 6-year old Black Pearl became the winners of the 2022 Dutch Young Pony Championships, which were held in IJsselmuiden on Saturday 3 September 2022.
New Concept and Show Series
These championships underwent a concept transformation and this year seven qualifiers were held across the Netherlands. The show series and finals were organized as a joint effort by the Dutch Welsh, New Forest Pony and NRPS society.
The Dutch Equestrian federation itself does not host a Dutch young pony championships. In The Netherlands the "young horse" championship is the Pavo Cup, hosted by the KWPN society. An overall YH Championship open to all studbooks does not exist in the Netherlands even though a few years ago an effort was made with the Subli Cup, but then the concept was abandoned.
The Dutch Pony Championships was open to young dressage ponies who had to do the qualifiers. The show jumping ponies could enter directly for the finals. The pony championships was also open to E-category ponies, oversized ponies above 148 cm height.
For the dressage finals 45 combinations took part and they were judged by dressage riders Tommie Visser and Yessin Rahmouni.
4-YO: Mochyndaear Dragonfly in Amber
Fifteen 4-year old ponies participated in the finals, which was won by Sophie van Iwaarden aboard Mochyndaear Dragonfly in Amber. The Welsh cross bred stallion is by Grand Prix horse Hexagons Double Dutch out of Kenwoods Princess Milly (by Kenwoods Tomahawk x Kenwoods Steven). He is bred by Mascha Reijs and sold to Thamar Zweistra and Leunus van Lieren during the 2022 NRPS licensing held at Van Lieren's own stable. The breeder's name has been dropped in favour of the owner's name Hexagon and Dragonfly won the 4-year old championship with 85 points. Van Iwaarden rode the stallion to solid eight scores: 8 for walk, 9.5 for trot, 8.5 for canter, 8.5 for submission, 8 for conformation and 8 for general impression.
The runner up was Isa Hollands aboard the Dutch Welsh pony Macciato (by Stella Calvin) with 84 points. The gelding got 8.5 for walk, 9 for trot, 8 for canter, 8.5 for submission, 8.5 for general impression and 7.5 for conformation.
"Dragonfly is a mini version of his sire Double Dutch," said Visser and Rahmouni. "Such power and expression. We heard afterwards he had also won the qualifier, but we made it a point not to look at previous results so that we could judge with fresh eyes. Dragonfly stood out and on top of that was very nicely presented. Macciato is a smaller pony, but such a great little animal that moves with ease."
Dutch junior rider Sita Hopman and Der Charmeur KH (by Dreiklang x Orchid's Tygo) were third with 82.5 points. This NRPS registered stallion received 8 for walk and trot, 8.5 for canter, submission and general impression and 8 for conformation.
5-YO: Tjiesto LH
Sixteen 5-year olds battled it out and Levi Heusinkveld really ruled the division taking first and second place. Aboard the Welsh pony Tjiesto LH (by Nia Domo's Bolero) she won the championship with 88.5 points, the high score of the day. The gelding got 8.5 for walk, 9 for trot, canter, submission and general impression and 8.5 for conformation.
Heusinkveld became the runner-up on Welsh gelding Spoorzicht's Jaguar (by Speycksbosch Dickens) with 82 points. This D-category pony got 8 for walk, 8.5 for trot, 8 for canter and submission and 8.5 for general impression and conformation.
The third place went to Esmae Niessen aboard the Welsh pony stallion Dempsey Sil (by Nia Domo's Bolero) on 81.5 points. He got 8 for walk, 8.5 for trot, 8 for canter, submission and general impression and 8.5 for conformation.
"For me the rideability and presentation was the deciding factor," said Visser about winner Tjiesto. "Levi rode like a professional: very controlled and with much feeling, in a beautiful frame, and she had both her ponies well on the aids."
6-YO: Black Pearl
Thirteen pairs competed in the 6-year old division and Lieve Berndsen topped the board with the Welsh mare Black Pearl (by Leuns Veld's Lord). He scored 8 for walk, 8.5 for trot, canter, submission and general impression and 9 for conformation to make a winning total of 84.5 points.
Yelin Kayalar and the Welsh pony stallion Spoorzicht's Jupiler (by Speycksbosch Dickens) were second with 83 points. The stallion got 8 for walk, 9 for trot, 8 for canter and submission and 8.5 for general impression and conformation.
Jonne Liefhebben and Welsh pony Goldwinshoeve VJ (by Goldwinshoeve Valerion) finished in third place with 79 points. This gelding got 8.5 for walk, 8 for trot, 7.5 for canter and submission and 8 for general impression and conformation.
"We thought Black Pearl was picture perfect, a really posh pony," said Visser. "This pony is nicely uphill and presented in a sympathetic way by Lieve Berndsen. It all came together with this combination.
