The 4-year old Extreme U.S., the 5-year old Everest, and the 6-year old Mac Toto became the winners of the 2023 Pavo Cup Finals, the Dutch warmblood young horse championships, held at the KWPN headquarters in Ermelo (NED) on Saturday 12 August 2023. The finals brought little surprise as the winners of the semi-finals pushed through and stayed on top in the Finals.

Following the semi-final round on Thursday in which around 55 horses age group competed, 18 four-year olds, 20 five-year olds, and 12 six-year olds moved onto the finals which consisted of two rounds: another round under saddle, presented by the own rider in front of judges..  The top three in each age category was test ridden a guest judge rider and this year that was Daniel Bachmann Andersen (DEN).

The Pavo cup finals is open to KWPN bred and registered horses as well as for foreign bred, but KWPN licensed stallions.

4-year olds: Extreme U.S.

The winners of the 4-year old semi-finals, Renate van Uytert-Van Vliet and Extreme U.S. (by Escamillo x Vivaldi), continued to ride on the wave of success and went on to win the finals, both round 1 and 2. Judges Patrick van der Meer, Tim Coomans, and Joyce van Rooijen - Heuitink rewarded the German licensed stallion with a 90.6 in first final round, while Daniel Bachmann favoured the gaits, rideability and potential of this stallion the most in round 2. He gave the horse a 10.  With 88 in the semi-finals, 90.6 in the finals and 10 in addition to it, Extreme U.S. took the Pavo Cup victory with 278.600 points.

"He's absolutely great to ride. I can't say anything negative about him," said Bachmann. "He has power, rhythm, self carriage, ability to collect and extend and is very strong in the topline. Renate did a super job, because he is very trusting and focused."

It was a double whammy for stallion owner Joop van Uytert as Dutch young rider team member Robin Heiden rode his KWPN stallion One Million (by Vivaldi x Apache) to the runner-up position. With 87.80 in the semi-finals, 90.40 in the first round of the finals and a 9.6 from Daniel Bachmann, this stallion totalled 274.200 points for a second place.

Former Dutch junior riders team member (2019) Annemijn Boogaard placed third aboard Myra Glaser's KWPN mare Oxxi Lena (by Secret x Don Tango). They were second in the semi-finals (87.8 pts), fourth in the finals first round (87.8 points and Bachmann rewarded the mare with 9.5. They totalled 270.60 for third place.

5-year olds: Everest

Phoebe Peters and Everest
Former European pony champion Phoebe Peters rode her employer Gert-Jan van Olst's KWPN bred and NRPS licensed Everest (by Especial x Vivaldi) to the victory in the 5-year old division after a thrilling competition with barn mate Charlotte Fry on Van Olst's Nacho (by Negro x Krack C).

Peters and Everest won the semi-finals with 89.8 points, but in the first round of the finals judges Maarten van der Heijden, Brecht D'Hoore, and Hans-Peter Minderhoud preferred Nacho and put him first with 88.4 while Everest was second with 88.0 points. However, Daniel Bachmann clearly preferred Everest and rewarded him with a 9.5, which put the grey stallion first overall with 272.800 points.

"The only disadvantage of this horse is that he's too small for me," Daniel joked about Everest. "He's fantastic to ride. He's soft in the contact, on the big and very focused for a young horse. The canter is a highlight, he can extend and collect so easily in it."

Fry and Nacho landed second place after an 9.2 from Bachmann (267.200 points). Benjamin Maljaars and Drost Horses's Napoli Sollenburg (by Total U.S. x Vivaldi) ended up in third place after a second spot in the semi-finals, yet dropped to fifth in the first finals round (86.8 points). Bachmann scored the horse 8.6 for gaits, rideability and potential. He totalled 259.800 points. The runner-up in the semi-finals,  Belgian Bart Desender on the German owned Most Wanted Nero (by Morricone x Donnerball), dropped to a 15th place in the finals and therefore did not get test ridden.

6-year olds: Mac Toto

Danielle Heijkoop on Mac Toto
Danielle Heijkoop and the black gelding Mac Toto (by Toto Jr x Jazz) continued his winning streak through the finals and captured the title in the 6-year old division. Owned by the rider, Brouwer and Van Uytert, Mac Toto scored 88.4 in the first round of the final and received  the highest score of 88.4 from judges Van der Heijden, D'Hoore and Minderhoud in the finals' round. However, Daniel Bachmann preferred Mr Magnum more, but the overall total of Mac Toto, 267.200 points, placed him first, good for the title. Mac Toto is bred by G. van de Laar.

"This horse's quality is fantastic," said Bachmann. "I think he's a really nice horse. He has a lot of power and you feel that at times in the contact. He gets a bit strong. I don't see that as something negative and I think this will get easier with time and training." The KWPN society allows 6-year olds to be presented in either a snaffle or double bridle. Mac Toto was shown in a double.

Thamar Zweistra and the bay stallion Mr Magnum, bred by A. Ter Haar and owned by stable Hexagon, moved from a 6th place in the semi-finals (85.4 points) to a second place in the finals with 88.2 points. Daniel Bachmann allocated the stallion the highest score of 9.2 points, but the total of 265.600 points ranked Mr Magnum second overall.

Third place went to Dinja van Liere and her WCYH finalist Mauro (by Zonik x Negro), bred by Jan Greve and owned by Reesink in partnership with the Koele couple (Turfhorst). They were second in the semi-finals (86.2 points) and tied in second place in the first round of the finals (88.2). Bachmann rewarded the black stallion with 8.9 points.
