Lorezo, the Bavarian warmblood that took Severo Jurado Lopez to the 2016 Olympic Games, has been retired from competition sport.

Lorenzo is a 17-year old gelding by Lord Loxley out of Bologna (by Rubin Royal). He is bred by Martin Niedermair in Germany.

Bundeschampionate

Lorenzo made his first claim of fame when he finished fourth in the 3-year old stallion class at the 2009 Bundeschampionate under Uwe Svhwanz.

The chestnut sold to the Danish couple Kirsten and Jorn Elkjaer-Holm and moved to Denmark. There he was trained and competed by Danish Grand Prix rider Sanne Henningsen, who made her show debut in Denmark in 2011. They were silver medalists in the 5-year old finals at the 2011 Danish Young Horse Championships. In 2012 they tried for Danish team selection for the World Young Horse Championships but in the end did not make it to Verden. They did win silver at the 2012 Danish Young Horse Championships in the 6-year old division.  In 2013 Henningsen took Lorenzo to Prix St Georges level and competed him at national small tour level through the spring of 2015.

Lorenzo was then sent to Andreas Helgstrand to be sold.

Under stable jockey Severo Jurado Lopez, he made his Grand Prix debut in November 2015. Their international show debut followed in February 2016 at the CDI Vestfold. They made a major splash at the CDIO Aachen where they became the crowd favourites in the freestyle and finished fourth with 83.350%. At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games they finished fifth in the Kur to Music with 83.625%.

After Rio, the pair competed at the CDI-W's in Odense and Salzburg, but they lost their groove at the CDI-W in Amsterdam, where the horse finished 10th in the Grand Prix and got eliminated from the freestyle.

Charlotte Jorst

In May 2017, Danish born American Charlotte Jorst acquired Lorenzo as her Tokyo hopeful.

Charlotte had planned her show debut on Lorenzo at the 2017 CDN Del Mar on 7 - 8 October 2017 but scratched because the horse had a reaction to a spider bite. At the end of October, however, he was diagnosed with a hoof related injury that has kept him from sport ever since.

In October 2018 Lorenzo returned to Europe to rehabilitate at Helgstrand and Jorst swapped him for other horses from the Danish horse dealzr. At the end of 2019 the ownership in the FEI database changed back to Helgstrand.

Jeanna Hogberg

Lorenzo was brought back to peak level by Severo Jurado Lopez, but when he decided in 2020 to go independent, the horse was allocated to Jeanna Hogberg and her name was added as owner in the FEI database with the Olympics in Tokyo in mind. Remarkably Charlotte Jorst (USA) was also listed again as co-owner again, suggesting again that he might be considered as an Olympic hopeful for the American.

It was Hogberg, however, who brought Lorenzo back into the show ring. They made their big come back and debut in Grote Brogel (BEL) in May 2021, placing second in the Grand Prix and winning the Special with 74.766%. After a start in Achleiten with a 73.761% score the pair got nominated on the Swedish team, not for the Olympics, but for the European Championships in Hagen, where they were 19th in the Special.

Their last international competition start was at the CDI Herning in March 2022, where they had to retire from the Grand Prix.

Retirement

Line Clausen with Lorenzo
Lorenzo remained at Helgstrand Dressage but did not return to the show ring. He has now been officially retired from competition sport at age 17 and will spend that retirement with his groom Line Thestrup Clausen.

Line originally groomed at Helgstrand Dressage but after she left she never stopped thinking about Lorenzo. According to Helgstrand she always dreamt of reuniting with him.

"This dream has now come true as she welcomed him home this week," Helgstrand wrote. "Now, Lorenzo enjoys a well-deserved retirement by Line's side, living out his days with pastures and forest rides. Dreams do come true, and for Lorenzo & Line, the journey continues to sparkle."
