The 20-year old breeding stallion Lord Leatherdale has returned to his owner, Gert-Jan van Olst, in The Netherlands and has been retired from sport.
Lord Leatherdale is a Rhinelander bred stallion by Lord Loxley out of Fairless P (by Ferragamo x Anmarsch). He is bred by Werner and Heike Pleines in Germany.
Breeding Stallion
Alongside Negro, Lord Leatherdale is a foundation stallion at Van Olst's station in Den Hout, The Netherlands, having sired British team horses Glamourdale and Everdale, amongst many others.
Lord Leatherdale was licensed at the 2005 Westfalian Stallion Licensing in Munster-Handorf and first stood at stud at Ferienhof Stucker in Germany before moving to Van Olst stables in The Netherlands, where he thrived as a breeding stallion.
Brief Focus on Sport
In 2015 Van Olst stables announced Lord Leatherdale's shift in focus from breeding to sport. Up till that point he had only once been competed in Germany, under Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen, at the 2011 CDN Zierow.
He was trained at home to Grand Prix level by Anne van Olst, Severo Jurado Lopez and Charlotte Fry, but was only very lightly competed, even after 2015.
Fry showed him at two internationals, their first at the 2016 CDI Roosendaal indoors at Young Riders level where they scored 65.877%in the team test and 57.632% in the individual. Four months later they also contested the CDI Nieuw en St Joosland in April 2017 and had 64.781% in the team test and retired from the individual class. At national level Fry and Lord Leatherdale rode up to Intermediaire II level.
Move to the U.K.
In the winter of 2020 the Lickley family leased Lord Leatherdale as a schoolmaster for British pony rider Isobel Lickley, who made the transition to junior level.
The pair made their debut at the premier league show at Keysoe in December 2020, scoring 65.23% to place 15th. In 2021 the combination showed at a handful of competitions in the U.K. at Advanced Medium level. At the 2021 British Championships they were fourth in the junior team test with 67.58%. Their last show was in December 2021.
Return Home
At the beginning of August 2023 Lord Leatherdale returned back home to Van Olst.
"He's back home now where can enjoy his retirement to the fullest," Gert-Jan van Olst told Eurodressage. "He has given us so much. Now the time for us has come to give him back a nice pension at home in Den Hout."
Amongst his famous licensed offspring are Glamourdale, Everdale, Chippendale, Fairy Tale (now gelded), Lord Europe, Davidoff van het Trichelhof, and Dundee M.
