The chestnut sire Edward (by Embassy x Fabriano) has been proclaimed "Hanoverian Stallion of the Year 2023" at the Hanoverian stallion licensing for show jumping colts on 2 December 2023.

After starting his career primarily as a dressage horse sire, he is now also in demand among show jumping horse breeders after his son King Edward's double gold at the World Championships in Herning/DEN.  Five years ago, his breeder Hans-Heinrich Dittmer from Radbruch in the Niedersachsenhalle already became recipient of the Grande Prize.

The Life of Edward

Edward was bred by Hans-Heinrich Dittmer in Radbruch in 2005 as the third foal out of state premium mare Fabienne. The dam was once the champion mare at the show in Luhmühlen and also won an award at the Louis Wiegels show in 2003. Her sire Fabriano stands for a versatile inheritance, as does Edward's father Embassy.

Edward's path took him straight to the Celle State Stud as a foal. He grew up in the Hunnesrück breeding farm and completed his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf with 120.72 points in jumping and 142.93 points in dressage. Following the stallion performance test, he was licensed and moved into a stallion box in Adelheidsdorf for the first time at the age of four before being stationed in Ankum as of 2010.

Riders Championships
Edward's sporting career started under Birte Senftleben before the experienced Hans-Peter Klaus took a seat in the saddle in the autumn of 2011. He led him to his first successes in S-level dressage in less than a year.

Just 12 months later, the stallion was ridden by Charlott-Maria Schürmann, who was able to seamlessly build on the successes of the previous year. In 2013, the two won silver with the team at the European Young Riders Championships in Compiegne, France.

Making His Mark as a Breeding Sire

Because of his dual talent, Edward came into the spotlight right from the start and gained a fan base that brought him show jumping, predominantly dressage and also half-blood mares.

Edward was awarded with the Grande Prize in 2018. His offspring have now reached top level in all three disciplines. This is what makes Edward unique in this day and age. Although he never was the most popular stallion with the breeders, he has sired around 500 foals, the vast majority is registered Hanoverian.

However, the most famous Edward offspring is the Belgian warmblood bred King Edward (Henrik von Eckermann), who is out of the BWP mare Koniging de Lauzelle (by Feo de Lauzelle x Garibaldi II). This chestnut won gold with the Swedish team at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo  and at the 2022 World Championships in Herning/DEN. In Denmark he also became World Champion. In April of this year, he also won the World Cup final in Omaha/USA.
