Umbro, Mary Hanna's 2016 World Cup Finals ride, has passed away. He was 23 years old.

Umbro was a Dutch warmblood gelding by Jazz out of Odinde S (by Juventus x Zuidhorn). He was bred by A. Van Roosmalen in Den Dungen, The Netherlands.

He was trained up to Prix St Georges level by Dominique Filion in The Netherlands. She competed him under the name "WesTrade's Umbro" up to Fourth level in 2009 before he sold to Australia.

One of Four

Umbro was one of four Grand Prix horses which Australian Olympian Mary Hanna competed in the 2010 - 2016 period alongside Sancette, Boogie Woogie, and Hamag W Strona.

Their international premier was at the CDI-W Melbourne in November 2011, where they won the World Cup qualifier with 66.650% in the Kur. The next four years they competed at CDI'd in Australia and Europe, including Compiegne, Aachen, Leudelange, Hickstead, Biarritz, Vidauban, Hagen, Hamburg, Bremen,

The pair's career highlight came in 2015 when they won two Pacific League World Cup Finals in Australia in the same year.  In January 2015 they won the league final at the CDI-W Boneo, riding to the music arranged for Limbo, Hanna's Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games. She decided not to make the trip to Europe for the 2015 World Cup Finals. In December 2015 she won the Pacific League finals again, this time in Werribee and headed to the 2016 World Cup Finals in Gothenburg, where she was 15th in the Kur to Music with 71.696%. Hanna went to the 2016 Olympics with the younger Boogie Woogie.

2016 was their last season together. At the World Cup Finals they stayed in Europe to show in Hagen, Odense, and Rotterdam, before concluding their carer at the CDI-W Melbourne.

Schoolmaster

In 2017 Hanna sold Umbro to Carola Haynes as a schoolmaster for Australian junior rider  Jasmine Haynes.

The gelding was a catch ride for visiting British Olympian Spencer Wilton at the 2017 CDI-W Boneo. He scored 71.425% in the Kur.

Haynes showed Umbro from 2018 through 2019, first at junior level at Boneo and Sydney, and in 2019 as a young rider at the same two venues. The horse's last show was in September 2019 at Boneo where he finished fourth in the YR Kur with 63.800%.

Retirement

Umbro was retired from sport at age 18. He spent his retirement in the field at Haynes' brood farm in Macedon, Australia.

"Being by Jazz he had a few quirks, but showed talent for the piaffe passage," Hanna told Eurodressage. "He became a reliable and trustworthy partner for many years with me, and after I retired him from the big sport, he went on to be a super school master for Jasmine Haynes, taking her through Junior and Young rider levels."

Hanna continued, "in his last years he was baby sitter to young horses bred by the Haynes, and passed away peacefully with Jasmine at his side. I thank the Haynes family for taking such good care of him, and making his last years of retirement happy and content."
