The 4-year old Patchouli Vera, the 5-year old Red Viper, and the 6-year old Nashville SW became the winners of the 2024 Pavo Cup Finals in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on 27 July 2024.
The Format
The Pavo Cup Finals consist of a semi-final round, which was held on on Thursday 25 July. Fifty-eight four-year olds, 41 five-year olds, and 25 six-year olds competed in the semi-finals following qualifiers all across The Netherlands in the spring.
Eighteen 4 and 5-year olds and thirteen 6-year olds moved onto round 1 of the Finals on Saturday. The top three moved onto the finals which consisted of two rounds: another round under saddle, presented by the own rider in front of judges.. The top four in each age category gets test ridden by a guest judge rider and this year that was Jessica Lynn Thomas (SWE).
The Pavo cup finals is open to KWPN bred and registered horses as well as for foreign bred, but KWPN licensed stallions.
4-YO: Patchouli Vera
In the 4-year old division it was the 2023 IBOP high scoring mare Patchouli Vera (by Kjento x Bordeaux) who outclassed the breeding stallion and took the title. Under Annemijn Boogaard the liver chestnut bested the semi finals with 87.8 points and then topped the first round of the finals with 88.6. Test rider Jessica Lynn Thomas rewarded her 93 points as second best in the test riding final. Her overall total of 269.4 points made Patchouli Vera the winner.
"This mare got a little insecure in her self carriage with me on top, but she did everything for me to do it right. It's a super lovely, elegant horse that is easy to ride and is not spooky in this atmosphere," Jessica Lynn commented. Patchouli Vera is bred by Annemijn's mum Florine de Voogd and her sister Veerle Boogaard.
The runner-up was Bart Veeze aboard Rom Vermunt's stallion Roman Empire (by Romanov x Sir Sinclair). He was fourth in the semi finals with 86.2 and was fifth in the first round of the finals, but test rider Thomas liked him the most and awarded the stallion 96 points. He totalled 267.8 points for second place.
Spaniard Ruben Lengual Reig and the Glock owned stallion Pablo Picasso (by Taminiau x Florencio) were third.
5-YO: Red Viper
In the 5-year old division the tables were turned for the two top place-getters in the 4 year old class. Bart Veeze now rode Eugene Reesink's stallion Red Viper (by Romanov x Sir Sinclair) to the title with 280.2 points. The liver chestnut topped the board in the semi-finals with 92.4 points and led the pack in the first round of the finals with 92.4 points. He was also most liked by the test rider, who rewarded the stallion 98 points.
"There is quite a difference in the length of our legs," said Jessica Lynn referring to Bart Veeze's tall posture. "Fortunately this horse made it very easy for me. He's sensitive to the aids and always busy with me. You can see it in his ears that he constantly looks what I'm doing."
Annemijn Boogaard this time finished in the runner-up position with Myra Glaser's mare Oxxi Lena (by Secret x Don Tango B) on 274.6 points. The pair got 91.6 in the semi-finals and 89 in the first round of the finals. Thomas gave her 94 points.
Danielle Heijkoop and her own gelding Olivius (by Totilas x Vivaldi) were third.
6-YO: Nashville SW
Femke de Laat and her stallion Nashville SW (by Secret x Jazz) found their winning Pavo Cup form again. After taking the title in 2022 in the 4-year old class, they were back on the highest step of the podium in the 6-year old division. The pair was third in the semi-finals (84.6), but moved to spot 1 in the first round of the finals with 89.4 points. Test rider Thomas scored the stallion 98 points so the horse totalled 272 points for the victory.
"I'm very impresed by this horse. I would give a lot to get him in my barn," said Jessica Lynn. "He has such great rideability."
Judith Ribbels and her own mare Nanny McPhee (by Vitalis x Sorento) were the reserve champions with 265.4 points, just like in 2022. The mare won the semi finals with 86.8 points and were second in the first round of the finals with 88.6 points. Thomas awarded the mare 90 points. Nanny McPhee totalled 265.4 points for second place.
The third place went to Zandra Birkeland on the stallion Ilegro (by Inclusive x Negro), bred by Valegro's breeder and owned by Van Olst.
