The German based Australian Olympic Team rider William Matthew will be sidelined for a while after an accident in the barn on 5 February 2025 which led to a fractured ankle.
"Shit happens, forgot how unpredictable horses can be and wasn’t careful enough," the 31-year old William explained. "Sadly yesterday I wasn’t quick enough and got kicked in the ankle. Tomorrow the chicken legs get some metal add-ons and hopefully i will be back in the saddle in no time."
Originally from Perth, Australia, William has been riding, learning, training, and competing in Europe for 13 years. Aboard Stephanie Goller's mare Mysterious Star (by Metall x Furst Heinrich) he had his big break through at international Grand Prix level. They made their CDI debut in March 2023 and competed at CDI's in Aachen, Tolbert, Exloo, Kronenberg, Hagen, Aachen, and Kronberg. They were selected on the Australian team for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and placed 24th in the Special with 69.711%
Matthew worked for Isabell Werth but recently decided to go independent. He is based at Hödl's Gut Kostenschlag with Ellen Hedbys, a Swedish Under 25 rider, and now trains with Patrik Kittel.
"Thank you to everyone who’s helped me the last days and thank you to all clients for your continued trust and patience while it’s healing," he stated.
