At the 2025 FEI General Assembly in Hong Kong, a very important election is coming: who will take over the position of chair of the FEI Dressage Technical Committee.

Current chair Maribel Alonso has declined running for a second term and two candidates have moved forward for this important spot which is key to the development and rule making of international dressage sport. They are Klaus Roeser and Diana al Shaer.

It seems to be a battle of David and Goliath.

IDRC Endorses Klaus Roeser

Last week, the IDRC (International Dressage Riders Club) sent an open letter to the press with its endorsement of Roeser as best choice for the post.

The open latter was Unanimously and fully signed by the Board of the International Dressage Riders Club, including Isabell Werth (GER) as President, Kyra Kyrklund (FIN) as Vice President, Michael Klimke (GER) as Treasurer, Beatriz Ferrer-Salat (ESP), Carl Hester (GBR) Yvonne Losos (DOM), Hans-Peter Minderhoud (NED), Victoria Max-Theurer (AUT), Catherine Haddad (LBN), and Christilot Boylen (CAN).

The open letter reads:

On behalf of the Board of the International Dressage Riders Club (IDRC), it is our great pleasure to express our unanimous support for the candidacy of Mr. Klaus Roeser for the position of Chair of the FEI Dressage Committee, to be elected at the FEI General Assembly in Hong Kong in 2025.

Mr. Roeser is a widely respected figure within the international dressage community, bringing together a unique combination of leadership experience, strategic vision, and deep knowledge of the sport at all levels. His distinguished career includes:

Being a Member of the FEI Dressage Committee (2015–2019), where he was recognized for his balanced and constructive leadership.

Acting as Secretary General of the IDRC, actively representing athletes’ interests and fostering cooperation between riders, officials, and federations.

Contributing as a member of the EEF Dressage Working Group, the EEF Board, and the FEI Dressage Strategic Working Group.

Serving as Chairman of the German Dressage Committee and Chef d’Équipe of the German Dressage Team, contributing to numerous international successes.

Beyond his impressive résumé, Mr. Roeser is known for his integrity, strategic thinking, and ability to build consensus among a wide range of stakeholders. He is committed to athlete representation, transparent governance, and sustainable development of our sport.

The IDRC Board firmly believes that Mr. Roeser’s leadership would strengthen the FEI Dressage Committee and contribute to the continued growth and success of dressage worldwide.

We kindly invite all FEI Member Federations to support Mr. Klaus Roeser’s candidacy for this important position.

Diana Al Shaer

As an international Grand Prix rider with a vast network, especially in the developing dressage nations such as the Middle East, Diana al Shaer is running against German powerhouse Roeser, who is already deeply woven in the fabric of the German Equestrian Federation, European Equestrian federation, and FEI through various committees and working groups.

Al Shaer wrote a mission statement which explains her goals if she were to be elected chair.

Stakeholder Engagement and Governance
I believe in a collaborative governance model. My recent transition from active international competition allows me to serve as a conduit for current riders, coaches, show organizers, and officials, ensuring that their practical insights are considered in committee decisions. Decisions should be made with a balanced consideration of the opinions of different stakeholders.

Strategic Development and Education
Through my work in development with the FEI Solidarity Department, I have seen the critical need to expand accessible education pathways for developing regions, as well as to encourage and assist new federations in organizing dressage educational events and shows under the guidance of experienced experts. This is fundamental to ensuring global horse welfare and elevating the competitive standard of our sport. A working group with the members of newly developing dressage regions could help to identify challenges and find pathways to encourage riders, officials, and show organizers at that stage, taking into consideration diverse conditions and geography.

Progressive Leadership and Crisis Resilience
My diplomatic experience with international NGOs has equipped me with the skills to navigate complex situations and implement timely changes. I advocate for a proactive approach—developing clear roadmaps and preventive measures to safeguard our sport's integrity and future, prioritize horse welfare, and protect our community members when needed.

Innovation and Promotion
I believe in sustainable growth, honouring the traditions of dressage while thoughtfully integrating innovation and IT to enhance its global appeal and relevance. As time doesn’t stand still, strategic planning to make dressage more attractive to audiences, potential partners, and sponsors is important.
