The Swedish Equestrian Federation will introduce a 13-year age limit for participation in international competitions, national championships and national series, starting in 2027 and no later than 2029.
The decision aims to create a safer and more inclusive sports environment for children. Riders under the age of 13 will still be able to compete, but not in the "elite" categories.
Preventing Drop Out
The Swedish Equestrian Federation is taking an important step to avoid early selection and dropout and instead create a safe environment where joy, community and learning are at the center.
The decision to set a 13-year age limit for competition at elite level and in national series is based on a clear responsibility supported by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the guidelines and statutes of the Swedish Equestrian Federation.
The purpose is to strengthen the development of children and young people in sports.
Children in Sport
According to the Swedish NF, "children's competition participation continues."
Children under 13 will also be able to compete in the future. The change only applies to the highest level and includes international starts, national championships, and nationwide series, where competition often involves greater pressure and early specialization.
This Swedish policy contradicts with the age limit the FEI has set of 12 years of age for FEI pony (12 - 16 YO) and children riders (12 - 14 YO).
Phased In
The decision will be phased in from 1 January 2027, with full implementation no later than 1 January 2029. No one currently competing at the affected levels will be removed from elite competition.
The phase-in will allow elite athletes to complete their competition within their age category before the new age limit comes into effect. The phased rule change will ensure a fair transition for both athletes and event organisers.
"With this decision, we want to give children a positive and sustainable start in their sport. It is not about eliminating competition, but about letting children develop at their own pace," said Sandra Ruuda, chairwoman of the Swedish Equestrian Federation.
