The German equestrian federation reported that the Bavarian Preis der Besten training selection trial in Munich has been stopped after animan welfare incidents took place in the night stalls. The police is investigating the matter.
After the night of 14 - 15 February several ponies exhibited unusual behaviour early Sunday morning, which led to the event being canceled on Sunday morning.
"According to the responsible veterinarian, Dr. Michael Zeitelhack, only a few ponies were affected. He assessed the overall condition of the ponies as good; no long-term damage is expected at this time," the FN reported.
Dennis Peiler, Chairman of the German Equestrian Federation (FN), stated: “We are deeply shocked by the incidents in Munich-Riem. We condemn this behavior in the strongest possible terms. The protection and well-being of the horses and ponies entrusted to our care are our top priority. It is of utmost importance to us that these incidents are fully investigated and appropriately punished.”
Thomas Schreder, Managing Director of the Bavarian Riding and Driving Association, added: “The events of last night have left us deeply saddened and speechless. We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are doing everything we can to fully investigate the incidents.”
