American Grand Prix rider Shannon Peters has retired her number one in the barn, Disco Inferno, from competition sport.
Disco Inferno is an 18-year old KWPN gelding by Westpoint out of Rilarna (by Houston x Zeoliet). He is bred by T. Wijmenga in The Netherlands.
Sport Career in California
Originally named Drees, the black was presented at the pre-selection for the 2011 KWPN Stallion Licensing but not accepted for the next round.
He sold as a sport horse to the U.S.A. and ended up in California with Shannon Peters as a 3-year old. Together with her husband, U.S. Olympic team rider Steffen Peters, she produced him to Grand Prix level.
The pair made its international show debut at small tour level in January 2018 at the CDI Del Mar and competed in the Prix St Georges and Inter I several times at CDI's in Del Mar that winter-early spring.
A two-year break from CDI showing followed and in March 2020 they returned at the CDI Temecula for their Grand Prix debut. The rest of his Grand Prix career he only showed internationally in California. Until the end of 2023 Thermal was the one venue where Shannon showed him, but in 2024 she also took him to Del Mar and Temecula. In 2025 they did four CDI's, their last being Thermal in November 2025.
Retirement
Shannon has now announced that the 18-year old has been retired from competition sport.
"As they say , all good things come to an end," Shannon announced. "My little Disco horse , aka the Flying Bean, Disco Biscuit, the little horse that could , is out from his competition life, and is going to be the chief trail horse, snack manager and may occasionally teach someone how to do one tempis or piaffe/passage."
Shannon continued, he "makes me smile every day. He is a testament of “never give up “ He truly was at his best the last few years of his career. How it should be. Always silly, he would still come flying into the warm up even at 17, bucking around and being playful. I was sure lucky to have such a horse in my life, as challenging as he was at times . He taught me to never take myself too seriously because for sure if I did, he would change that quickly."
