A private dressage yard near St. Gallen, Switzerland, is looking for an experienced, reliable and discreet groom / estate caretaker to assist in the daily management of the yard.
This is a long-term live-in position for someone who genuinely loves horses, enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in caring for a beautiful private estate.
The yard is situated in a peaceful natural setting, while being only approximately 10 minutes from St. Gallen and accessible by public transport.
The owners are looking for someone who would like to build a long-term and trusting working relationship.
The position
The work is varied and combines horse care, stable duties, estate maintenance and outdoor work.
Depending on experience and interests, responsibilities include:
- Daily care and supervision of horses
- Feeding, watering and general horse care
- Stable duties and keeping the stable areas clean and well maintained
- Turning horses in and out and general assistance with the daily stable routine
- General care and maintenance of the estate
- Gardening and grounds maintenance
- Mowing, strimming, pruning and seasonal outdoor work
- Operating professional garden and agricultural machinery
- Tractor work – experience with tractor and trailer is highly desirable
- General practical maintenance around the property
- Keeping an eye on the estate and independently taking care of everyday tasks
- For a couple, household support can also be included depending on experience and interests
The candidate, or candidates if applying as a couple, should be practical, hands-on and able to work independently. They should work with kindness and see what needs to be done without needing constant supervision.
The ideal candidate
Groom / Horse Caretaker / Stable Manager / Farm or Estate Caretaker / Gardener / Groundskeeper
Previous experience with horses is very important.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Solid practical experience with horses
- Experience with daily stable routines and horse care
- Experience with gardens, grounds or estate maintenance
- Experience operating tractors and other machinery
- Tractor and trailer experience is a strong advantage
- A valid driving licence
- The ability to work independently and responsibly
- A practical, hands-on approach
- Reliability, discretion and honesty
- A genuine love of horses, animals and nature
- Good physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors
- Good, verifiable references
- A willingness to relocate to Switzerland for the long term
- Non-smoker
"For us, personality and reliability are just as important as formal qualifications. Spanish and Portuguese-speaking applicants are very welcome," said the owner. "We are particularly happy to hear from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking grooms and couples. Fluent English is not essential. We speak some Spanish ourselves and are happy to communicate with the right person."
Basic English or German is an advantage, but not a requirement.
