Satchmo's first competition performance since the 2008 Olympic Games was good for victory, though not fault free. Everyone was holding their breath for the piaffe, but there were no mistakes in that movement. The test was not error free, though, as the bay Hanoverian gelding stumbled and hit the fence. Werth and Satchmo kept their cool, but a little later there was a mistake in the two tempi changes.
The revelation of the show was not Satchmo but Nadine Capellmann aboard a tremendously improved Elvis VA. Finally trained again by Klaus Balkenhol, who coached Nadine to all her big titles, the chestnut Hanoverian was no longer the stiff-in-the-back and dead-in-the-mouth super moving talent, but he appeared swinging and loose in the body, chewing on the bit and with an almost constant contact between the bit and the rider's hands. According to St. Georg, Elvis showed the best pirouettes of the day and Capellmann was seemingly enjoying her ride so much that she forget to ride the last extended trot on the diagonal but went straight on the track. "He trotted the way Klaus wants to see it," Capellmann said Losing ten points for her program error, Capellmann finished second with 73.458%. Photo courtesy: Barbara Schnell

Satchmo is back! It was a very rare occasion to see such an emotional Isabell Werth at a "normal" dressage show. Riding a new Grand Prix Special personal best score, Werth won the class aboard Satchmo with 79.360%. The piaffe was not the highlight of the test, but it was safe and correct, while all other movements were quite outstanding. "Satchmo would have earned the Olympic title," Isabell Werth told St. Georg. " I know for sure that it was only a cramp there and not resistance."It was Werth's post-Hong Kong plan to compete Satchmo again for the first time in Stuttgart. "After Hong Kong he was hyperactive. He had a break for two weeks during which he went into the field with his pony, the only horse he accepts and respects in the stable," Werth commented. Werth also had a comment on Princess Haya's systematic deconstruction of the FEI Dressage Committee. "We're not with George Busch in Iraq or in the Wild West," Werth told the assembled press. "There has to be an end, a new beginning." What this entails will be discussed at the IDRC Annual Meeting in Berlin this week. Nadine Capellmann was unable to repeat her outstanding Grand Prix performance on Elvis VA. The chestnut broke into canter in the trot half pass and some more small mistakes followed, which caused them to drop to ninth place. Photo courtesy: Barbara Schnell
