The 2000 Trakehner Stallion of the Year Tuareg has passed away at age 27. Last week the black stallion suffered from old age due to a failing heart. Owner Elke von Lingelsheim decided to have him euthanized.

"It happened last week," von Lingelsheim told St. Georg. "The day before he was fresh and eating well. Then in the morning he ate normally but he lay down, which is unusual for him. At noon he no longer wanted to eat. We called the vet who diagnosed him with a failing heart. To spare him from a painful death we decided to euthanize him."

Tuareg was the third approved son of one of the breed's best mares ever, the famous Herzbube-daughter Tilsit III from Gestüt Panker. His sire Radom, a Mahagoni x Kassius son, was an accomplished S-level dressage horse with Donatus von Hessen.

Approved in Neumünster in 1988, Tuareg was acquired at auction by Elke von Lingelsheim and the Canadian Hollenbach family. He was first developed as a young dressage horse by Silke Buck and then relocated to Gestüt Immenklimt and Klaus Martin Rath, where he ewas further trained and shown successfully at Inter I level. After Mr. Rath left Holstein, Tuareg relocated to Gestüt Gröhnwohldhof, where he was stationed for several years.

Tuareg was a first rate mare producer. Many of his daughters have had tremendous impact on the production of good sport horses within the Trakehner breed. But Tuareg really stood out as a top dressage horse sire, with over 150 competing offspring. He was certainly never a highly popular stallion in terms of total numbers of foals produced, but a significant percentage of his offspring competed at advanced levels, up to international level. Avalon (U. Salzgeber), Romancero (N. Sayn-Wittgenstein), Sotheby's (K. Schulze-Bergmann) and of course Renaissance Fleur TSF and Tattoo (M. Theodorescu) are just a few to name.

Tuareg leaves his approved sons Königsmark and Kancun for the breed, and hopefully this valuable sport horse line will be continued in the future.
