German dressage rider and trainer Gaby Winkelhues passed away totally unexpected at home on 6 December 2022. She was 66 years old.

Winkelhues (née Mirbach) was the Rhinelander regional junior/young riders champion in 1972 and 1973 and became the 1974 German Youth Champion in Einod aboard the horse Honorus. In 1978 she was the Rhinelander regional champion at Grand Prix level.

She married dressage rider and Rhinelander regional team trainer Wolfgang Winkelhues and the couple ran a dressage stable in Bonn, Germany.

Their daughter Katharina Winkelhues was the 2002 and 2003 European Pony Champion on legendary pony stallion Dressman. She also won the German Pony Championships in 2002.

Between 2007 and 2009 Gaby hosted and managed the international youth riders competition, titled "European Youngster Classic," at her stable.

Gaby's death comes as a great shock. The suspected cause is an aortic rupture.
