Marion Engelen won the 2010 Piaff Forderpreis selection trial hosted in Warendorf, Germany, on 5 - 7 February. German team trainers Jurgen Koschel and Holger Schmezer worked trained all twenty-eight riders invited for this selection trial on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday they had to ride a Short Grand Prix test.
The level of quality of this year's pack was lower than in previous years when young Grand Prix riders presented such talented horses are Renoir (Matthias Rath), Duvalier (Anna Katharina Luttgen) and Cockney (Sonja Bolz). This year there were no major highlights though several riders presented very interesting, but green Grand Prix horses.
Marion Engelen rode a very solid and beautiful round and was generously scored 71.138% to win the class. Trained by Ton de Ridder, Engelen was the 2008 Piaff Forderpreis winner and 2009 reserve champion with Diego (by Don Larino). Former young rider Kirsten Sieber and her chestnut Charly placed second with 66.992% followed by Kathleen Keller on Wonder FRH with 66.667%.
Fourth placed Jenny Lang and her Holsteiner gelding Loverboy were spotted as shooting stars. Trained by Pieter van der Raadt, the combination received 66.585% from the panel of judges and has much more potential in store.
2009 Piaff Forderpreis winner Kristina Sprehe saddled a new mount, Gestut Sprehe's liver chestnut stallion Donnerball (by Donnerhall x Alabaster). Previously trained and competed by Holga Finken, a very inexperienced looking Donnerball scored 64.715% and showed great promise.
Ton De Ridder's student Max Wadenspanner took over the ride on the 9-year old Rhinelander gelding Bandor (by Breitling W) from Ton's daughter Jill de Ridder, who presented the horse in the junior riders classes before.
Stefanie Weihermüller bought the 12-year old Fantomas (by Florestan x Pilot) only three weeks ago at Jurgen Koschel's yard and now finished 7th with 65.85%.
The top 15 riders are qualified to compete in the 2010 Piaff Forderpreis show circuit. Piaff qualifiers are held at Mannheim, Lingen, Verden, Cappeln (at Sissy Max-Theurer's Gesut Vorwerk) and the finals are in Stuttgart in December. In October an extra training seminar with Klaus Balkenhol is organized for them at Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff's Schafhof in Kronberg.
