German magazine ST.GEORG reported that German A-team rider Anabel Balkenhol has been hospitalized in Recklinghausen due to a very contagious viral infection.
Last Sunday Balkenhol had to withdraw from competing in the Kur to Music Finals at the 2010 CDIO Aachen because she became ill with the stomach flu. In the night of Saturday to Sunday, Balkenhol got stomach and bowel problems but she still tried to ride Dablino very early in the morning. Her temperamental Hanoverian was resistant and unruly when the freestyle sound check was being carried out, which fueled speculation that Balkenhol withdrew because she was "afraid" to ride the Kur.
"When you are allowed to ride in Aachen, you at least try to ride there," she told St. Georg. Her illness was the only reason for her withdrawal. "I have a nice freestyle and I hope I can ride it soon," she added to Eurodressage.
At home, Balkenhol's condition worsened as she got a high fever. She was hospitalized on Tuesday and diagnosed with norovirus, the main cause of gastroenteritis. She is currently in the isolation ward and only her close relatives can see her wearing protective clothes.
Danish judge Susanne Baarup replaced Elisabeth Max-Theurer on the panel of judges as the latter was not allowed to judge the 5-year old Finals with her employee Kira Wulferding riding in it
Minna Telde and Isac were very promising in the preliminary Test (6th) but dropped to a 9th place. She was last to go but had to ride in a very noisy ring as the Dutch were already popping champagne and celebrating Astrix' victory.
Danish John Hvalsoe Saul on the Trakehner stallion Aston Martin (by Monteverdi x Sixtus). Some mistake in the transitions and some tension reduced the submission score, but the horse has a nice trot and canter. They scored 8.04
Kira Wulferding on the Oldenburg mare Weihegold (by Don Schufro x Sandro Hit). The mare is active behind in trot and showed good swing in the back in canter, but she performed both simple changes three meters off the track
Eva Möller and the Hanoverian Sarkozy (by Sandro Hit) had an off-day in the finals. Contact issues, a bad pirouette, lack of impulsion & an unfortunate program error reduced the score to 8.02. The walk was super.
Steffen Frahm and Henglein's Licosto, a Westfalian stallion by Licotus x Rosenkavalier. The trot was a bit hurried, the walk was brilliant and the canter lacked ground cover. They got 8.44 and finished 7th.
Dutch Laurens van Lieren made it into the finals via a victory in the consolation finals. With the KWPN bred President's Allright (by Jazz x Royal Dance) van Lieren put down a safe, obedient but lacklustre ride. They were 13th with 7.8
Vai Bruntink rode one of the most talented 5-year olds in the Finals: Anne Beth (by Oscar x Corleone) has a world class trot and a very good canter. She was tense and spooky and made mistakes though: 14th with 7.74
French Benedicte Smalto and the KWPN bred Aptrick (by Tango x Kennedy) closed the ranks in 15th place with 7.62. The trot was dull, the walk was fantastic and in canter the horse needs to be more supple and balanced.
Austrian Grand Prix rider Peter Gmoser was at the show to help his student Belinda Weinbauer ride Ronaldinho (by Rohdiamant x Warkant), owned by Gmoser and bred by Lisa Feischl
Eva Jancarikova, from the Czech Republic, finished sixth in the consolation finals with Ferry, a Hanoverian by Federweisser x Weltmeyer. The pair scored 7.84. Ferry is a gorgeous, refined horse but is quite sensitive.
Swedish Jennie Larsson saddled Tinne Vilhelmson's Swedish warmblood Manchester (by Weltman x Midt West Ibi Light) to finish 8th in the consolation with 7.74
Spanish Chloe Morris Talbot, born to British parents and originating from Mahon, Menorca, finished 12th in the B-finals with Santana, a Rhinelander mare by Sunny Boy x Rubioso N. Trained by Werth, Morris got 7.6
Finnish Tuija Tuominen rode Samba Queen S, an Oldenburg mare by Sir Donnerhall x Lord Liberty to a 14th place in the B-finals with 7.42. The bay mare has a good canter
Swedish Jeanna Högberg slotted in 16th (7.38) in the consolation with Wellington (by Weltman x Campari). The horse has much cadence in trot but was a bit open and unbalanced in the frame.
Belgian Natasja van den Bogaert ranked 17th in the B-finals at the 2010 WCYH in Verden. QC Roberto Cavalli, a Hanoverian stallion by Rotspon x Metternich, scored 7.36 in total. In the preliminary round he was one of very few to get a 9 for walk.
Estonian Dina Ellermann competed two horses in the 5-year old division. With the grey Danish warmblood Royal Pokemon (by Royal Diamond x Heslegards Louis) she finished 25th with 6.78
These are the second World Young Horse Championships for Israeli Raz Nitzani, who trains in The Netherlands. With Hexagons Adonie (by Rubiquil x Partout) ranked 27th with 6.58
