2017 European Dressage Champion and World Cup winner Isabell Werth finished third in the award race for the title of "German Sport Athlete of the Year 2017".
A group of 1300 expert sport journalists were allowed to vote on the German Athlete and Team of the Year. The results were announced at a gala in Baden Baden, Germany, on Sunday 17 December 2017.
Werth was thrilled with her third place in the female athlete category. "This is really the icing on the cake this year. It can't get any better," the Rheinberg based rider commented. "At the moment I'm incredibly fortunate to have great horses, without them I wouldn't be here. We are nothing without our horses, just pedestrians. Those horses and an entire team which has supported me for years are at the basis of my success."
Aboard Christine Arns-Krogman's Oldenburg mare Weihegold OLD (by Don Schufro x Sandro Hit), the 48-year old Werth won the 2017 European Championships, the 2017 CDIO Aachen and the 2017 World Cup Finals.
The German Athlete of the Year award for females was won by biathlete Laura Dahlmeier and for males by Nordic combined skier Johannes Rydzek.
The German dressage team finished 9th for the Team Award. The winners was the beach volley ball team Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst.
