Pony rider Ingvild Abrahamsen, junior rider Anine Morch Aas, young rider Marie Hoff, and senior Grand Prix rider Jonas Elvebakk became the winners of t the 2019 Norwegian Dressage Championships in Drammen, Norway, on 23 - 25 August 2019.
While Norway remained strikingly absent at the major European Championships this year, with no representation at the Pony Euros in Poland, nor at the Senior Championships in Rotterdam, at national level the interest in participating was good.
Twenty-pony riders for category 1, 21 junior riders, 22 young riders and just 4 Grand Prix riders assembled in Drammen for the Nationals.
Ingvild Malene Abrahamsen and the 13-year old gelding Wotan (by Holsteins William x Prinzipal) became the national pony champions after winning all three rounds. The pair posted 68.974% in the team test, 67.927% in the individual test and 70.655% in the Kur. Abrahamsen, who has yet to compete at her first international, collected a total of 207.556 points, but had silver medal winning Anne Mathilde Reimer Haga on her heels with 206.609 points. Aboard the 17-year old mare Burton's Baya, Anne scored 66.624%, 69.350% and 70.635%. The bronze went to Benedicte Egger Staalesen and the 14-year old gelding Mr Magic (by The Braes My Mobility x Cocky Dundee). They posted a total of 205.678% after earning 68.504%, 67.114% and 70.060%.
In the pony division for smaller category 2 ponies, Tonne Mette Boye scored the gold on the 9-year old Gjerdals Firefly, while Sondre Torp Kristiansen got silver on the 16-year old Honeymoon (by Honeymoon Star x Mouka Tuam) and Andrine Langaker finished with bronze on 20-year old Starfighter.
In the junior division, European Championship rider Anine Morch Aas wielded the axe of power aboard the experienced 14-year old Swedish bred Maserati (by Metall x Purioso) as the only rider to score three times above 70%. The pair posted 71.937% in the team test, 72.456% in the individual test and 74.925% in the Kur. The silver medal went to Maren Aarflot Strandheim on the 7-year old Danish mare Svalegards Alanya (by Attention x Akinos). They were consistent in the first two rounds with 68.514% and 68.596% and upped the ante in the Kur with 72.696%. Euro Championship rider Kristiane Askim Hillern slotted in third overall for the bronze medal. Aboard the 10-year old Hanoverian mare Schnell's Happy Birthday, she scored 67.207%, 68.070% and 73.190%.
In the young riders' division, Marie Hoff and the 15-year old Oldenburg bred River Dance II (by Rhodes Scholar x Cordeur) were a league of their own and topped the board in all three rounds with seventy plus scores. They posted 70.614% in the team test, 71.158% in the individual and 73.455% in the Kur to Music for the overall victory and gold medal on a total of 215.227 points. Ingrid Tveit and the 16-year old Danish bred Mirano by Milan x Mago xx) were good for silver with 207.185 points, but that medal was hard fought as Pernille Hoistad and Tailormade Tornado (by Temptation x Romanov) were on their heels with a 206.466 point total. Tveit and Mirano scored 66.667%, 68.658% and 71.860%, while Hoistad posted 66.360%, 68.816% and 71.290%.
The Norwegian Grand Prix division fails to develop and with Cathrine Rasmussen, Trude Hestengen, and Siril Helljesen and 2018 National Champion Louise Lokken not out and about on Grand Prix horses (and Lillan Jebsen retired from horse sport), the country is quite anemic at the highest level of dressage sport. With only four combinations at the 2019 Nationals, compared to 10 in 2018, the Grand Prix division was a bit lacklustre.
Nonetheless routinier Jonas Elvebakk and the 12-year old Dutch mare Citta (by Jazz x Candyboy) became the new national Grand Prix campions after scoring 66.579% in the Grand Prix, 67.660% in the Special and 71.600% in the freestyle. He was neck to neck with Danish based Ellen Birgitte Farbrot in the 14-year old Danish mare Tahennya (by Hennessy x Macho), who won the Grand Prix with 67.816% but was second in the Special (65.600%) and in the Kur (70.950%). Anine Birgitte Thoresen and the 13-year old Danish gelding Rasputin (by Romanov x Don Schufro) were good for bronze with 61.947%, 64.360% and 65.225%.
