German based Portuguese dressage rider Ana Teresa Matos Pires is moving from her employer of three years, Hof Borgmann, to a new opportunity at Hof Beckerode in Hagen.

From the Azores to Germany

The 27-year old Pires is originally from Terceira island in the Azores but moved to Germany in 2013 at age 20 to establish herself as a professional dressage rider.  She accepted a working student job in Germany and didn't hesitate a moment to make the move.

Only speaking Portuguese, Ana was thrown into the deep end with no knowledge of Germany or English. First she worked at Paul Schockemöhle's yard and got to ride stallions such as Ferrari OLD and Total Hope and then she worked three years at Hof Kasselmann, where she got the opportunity to learn on Grand Prix horses and compete in Germany for the first time in 2016.

In 2018 she accepted the position of head young horse rider at Hof Borgmann in Ostbevern, Germany.

At Hof Borgmann, Pires mainly rode young horses and with them she achieved her first regional title in her career and got selected to ride at the German and World Young Horse Championships..

She rode her first Bundeschampionate in 2018 on Daily Sunshine (by Dujardin x Wolkenstein II).

In 2019 she qualified two horses for the Bundeschampionate (About You, Braveaux) but ended up showing neither in Warendorf as she broke her foot two weeks before the Bundeschampionate.

On the Westfalian stallion About You (by AC-DC x Estobar) she did win the 2019 Westfalian Young Horse Championships. The stallion went on to be sold for 1.65 million euro at the 2020 Hof Borgmann Auction.

With Asa Bjorklund 's Hanoverian Braveaux (by Bordeaux) she was selected to represent Portugal at the 2019 World Young Horse Championships in Ermelo, but did not take him to this highly important event.

"Braveaux was selected for the Portuguese team, but I rode the selection for the German team also and that is not allowed," said Pires about not riding at the World Championships. "At that moment we didn’t know, so the FEI put us out." Instead she rode Engelchen in the 4-year old pilot project national class at the World Championships in Ermelo.

Pires believes the timing is right to establish herself as an independent rider. She has resigned at Hof Borgmann and is moving to Hof Beckerode in Hagen.

"I’m moving to a smaller stable in Hagen," Pires told Eurodressage. "I’m leaving because I want to ride a bit more older horses than young ones. I had some really nice older horses at Stephan’s but more young ones. I really like Stephan and we had a good relationship for 3 years, but now is time for me to try something different."

Ana will be joining the team at Koch family's Hof Beckerode, next door to Hof Kasselmann.

"I will work for them in the mornings and in the afternoon I have my one business with clients horses," she said.
