2021 Swedish Dressage Championships

Children rider Annie Walfridsson, junior rider My Sandgren, young rider Ellen Linden Urnes, Under 25 rider Lina Dolk, and senior Grand Prix rider Patrik Kittel became the winners of the 2021 Swedish Dressage Championships in Flyinge on 13 - 22 August 2021.

The event was spread out over two weeks, starting with the children and juniors on the weekend of 13 - 15 August, followed by the young riders, U25 and seniors on 20 - 22 August 2021.

In the Children class nine combinations competed and five moved on to the second of two rounds. Annie Walfridsson and Julia Hogman's 12-year old Oldenburg mare Cosima (by Quaterback x Contender) reigned supreme winning both rounds with 74.350% and 72.940% for the title. Juni Skobe Rosen and the 8-year old Swedish mare Darthula VH (by Dalwhinnie x Corrado WL) got silver with 69.575% and 66.060%, while the bronze went to Sigrid Bjorndal on the 20-year old Swedish gelding Il Grande (by Gigolo x Kaliber) with 68.400% and 64.918%.

Twenty-eight junior riders travelled to Flyinge to compete for the national title over three rounds. Thirteen of the highest ranked riders after two rounds moved on to the kur to music finals. The junior riders' battle was a tumultuous one with the competition being fierce and riders moving all over the board in the different rounds. There was no clear favourite and to the last day the battle was undecided. My Sandgren and her own 15-year old Swedish gelding Hampusz M.Ge (by Sandreo x Don Schufro) moved into the winner's circle on the highest step of the podium with the other two podium place-getters just one percent apart. Sandgren was third in the team test with 69.747% and third in the individual with 69.951%. She placed fourth in the Kur with 71.895 %, yet her total of 211.593 points placed her first. Emilia Berglund Bergakra and the 18-year old Swedish mare Primavera (by Don Primero x Figaro L) were good for silver on 211.160 points with 68.283%, 70.147% and 72.730%. She was fifth, second and first in the three rounds. The bronze went Mary-Sophie Haid Bondergaard aboard the 11-year old Hanoverian mare Adora Nightingale (by Ampere x Regazzoni) who won the team test with 70.303%, was seventh in the individual with 68.677% and fifth in the freestyle with 71.435% to finish third overall with 210.415 points.

The Young Riders podium: Lindholm, Linden Urnes, Illerfelt

The Young Riders' division was packed with 34 combinations entered. Fifteen competing in the Kur. Ellen Linden Urnes and the 14-year old Westfalian gelding Fairy Tale (by Friedensritter x Rosenkavalier) kept their form from the 2021 European YR Championships, which translated in their first national title. Trained by Sofie Lexner, the duo was second in the team test and individual with 71.324% and 71.765% and won the kur with 73.895%, giving them the lead in the overall ranking. Linden Urnes is the new Swedish Young Rider champion with 216.984 points. Amanda Lindholm and the 14-year old Swedish mare Rozette (by Rosevelt x Ragazzo) were 1.5 percentage points in total behind her on the silver step of the podium with 215.315 points. The combination posted 70.735%, 71.225% and 73.355%. The bronze went to Swedish team rider Matilda Illerfelt on the 15-year old KWPN gelding Bento D (by Florencio x Havidoff) on 212.580 points. They improved their score throughout the week, starting with 68.726% in the team test and going to 71.029% in the individual and 72.825% in the Kur.

Twelve pairs competed in the Under 25 division, which consisted of two rounds, the Short Grand Prix and Kur. Five combinations rode the freestyle for a chance for a medal. Lina Dolk and Anna Edling's 18-year old Westfalian gelding Languedoc (by Laomedon x Francisco) were second in the first round with 67.778%, but aced the kur with 73.805 for the gold medal on 141.583 points. Elin Mattsson and her sister Marina's 19-year old Swedish gelding Beckham (by Bernstein x Koncerz xx) won the first round with 68.675% but could not crack the 70% marker in the freestyle. They posted 69.380% for a second place and got silver with 138.055 points. Victoria Karlsson and the 14-year old KWPN gelding Cum Laude SVU (by Johnson x Amethist) were good for bronze on 133.405 points after scoring 64.145% and 69.260%.

Twenty-nine combinations participated in the senior Grand Prix tour for the national title. Only two rounds were contested, the Grand Prix and the top 15 moving straight to the freestyle. German based Patrik Kittel has made it his mission to set a record in national titles and is a loyal attendant of the Championships. His 2021 Tokyo Olympic team mates Therese Nilshagen and Juliette and Antonia Ramel have never made the Nationals a priority and just like in 2020 they were not there. They are top listed for team selection for the 2021 European Championships in Hagen (GER) in three weeks. Danish based Jeanna Hogberg did travel to Flyinge to prove a point as she was not considered for Tokyo team selection.

Kittel grabbed his eighth title in his career, time time riding the his own and Arlette Jasper-Kohl's 9-year old Westfalian mare Forever Young HRH (by Furst Fugger x Don Bosco). The mare was discovered by Helder Carvalho and trained to FEI level by his partner, German based Dutch rider Caroline Burema. The mare moved to Kittel's yard Eulenhof in January 2020. The new combination had its show debut in April 2021 in the short Grand Prix at a local show in Mönchengladbach. A week ago they competed at the CDI Donaueschingen before trailering all the way north to Flyinge for the Nationals. Riding the horse in a snaffle, Kittel won the Grand Prix with 76.087% and the freestyle with 79.995%. Hogberg and Charlotte Jorst's 15-year old Bavarian gelding Lorenzo (by Lord Loxley x Rubin Royal) were twice second with 74.348% and 79.130%. Malin Wahlkamp-Nilsson and the Ramel family's 10-year old Wurttemberger Amplemento (by Ampere x Sir Oldenburg) got the bronze with 71.413% and 77.745%.
