Breeding Manager Ulrich Hahne about the format of the 2021 licensing

The changes to the Hannoveraner Verband’s licensing process initiated last year have been further, with the result that in 2021, for the first time, we will be holding two licensings separated by discipline.

(breeder: Josef Brinkemöller, Georgsmarienhütte)
From November 4 to 6, the focus will be entirely on the dressage stallions which were selected from October 1 to 6.

"This year, the stallion pre-selection took place one month later for the first time," Hahne said. "This is one measure in trying to balance selection, marketing and animal welfare of the young stallions and we will have to further measures if we want to continue to welcome our young stallions as two years old in the fall at the triangle, the heart of our licensing. The welfare of young horses is a concern for us. The careers of many stallions which once made their first great appearance at the licensing show that the basis for a long-lasting sport career can already be created in their youth."

Hahne continued, "I’m particularly happy that this year the special “Stallion Sales flair” can return. After having to present the young stallions almost to the exclusion of the public in 2020, we can open the gates of the Niedersachsenhalle again this year. Even if not every seat can be filled yet, we will again have the opportunity to welcome breeders and interested people from all over the world in Verden."

Titel Hero Escamillo

2021 Hanoverian Stallion Licensing catalogue
He is a stallion from a very special line. At his 14-day test in Neustadt (Dosse), the judges repeatedly awarded scores of 9.0 and better, and his test rider was also absolutely thrilled with the rideability of the Rhineland stallion. We are talking about Escamillo, who left the Verden licensing in 2017 as a premium stallion and won the silver medal 2021 at the World Championships for six-year-old dressage horses in Verden in August with his rider Manuel Dominguez Bernal. This licensing will be his premiere - he is represented with five offspring in the licensing lot.

Escamillo was born in 2015 at Dr. Carolin Langhorst‘s Tenterhof stud in Ratingen. The passionate breeder and owner of a specialized veterinary practice for horses is herself active in the saddle. „We have been breeding for twelve years, intensively for about nine years,“ she says. Escamillo‘s dam is the 2006-born Rohdiamant daughter and premium mare Cassila, who is out of the famous dam line of Cinderella from Wendeln. Numerous licensed stallions, premium mares and successful sport horses can be attributed to her. His breeder has many good memories of Escamillo: „He was a very cheeky foal back then, mischievous and a real stallion type right from the start.“

(breeder: Tobias Schult, Hünxe)
Even today, she follows his career. Escamillo left the Hannoveraner licensing in Verden as a premium stallion and the bay stallion also completed his 14-day test in April 2018 more than promising. The judges awarded a „very good“ (9.0) for his character, willingness to perform and rideability as well as for his conformation and trot. For canter and rideability - graded by the test rider - he even received two times a 9.5. With an overall dressage score of 9.08, he was the best among the dressage stallions and took second place with a final score of 8.35 in the overall ranking. This, of course, particularly pleases his owner Kimberly Davies from the USA, with whom Dr. Carolin Langhorst is in constant contact. In 2019, Escamillo moved to Helen Langehanenberg‘s stable and could already qualify for the then cancelled World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in 2020. In Verden, he was now presented by Langehanenberg‘s stable rider Manuel Dominguez Bernal. „A good combination,“ as the judges said and also attested this with their score for the very good prospect (9.5). A 9.5 was also given for the walk with good overstride and in a secure beat, as well as for the rideability of the stallion. The final score of 9.34 speaks for itself.

The Precious Daughters of De Niro

No. 45 by Millennium/De Niro/Wittinger
(Half-brother to Leuchtfeuer De)
(breeder: Johann von der Decken, Krummendeich)
Last year Daylight by De Niro/Weltmeyer (breeder: Wilhelm Klausing, Diepholz) was awarded Hannoveraner Mare of the Year. In addition, however, Düne by De Niro/Wittinger (breeder Johann von der Decken, Deckenhausen), born in 1999, is another daughter of De Niro with good heredity. Her first foal is Leuchtfeuer De by Londonderry. The chestnut is successful up to Grand Prix under Patricia Koschel. For the past three years, Düne has delivered young stallions for the Verden licensing in combination with Millennium. In 2019 and 2020, her sons were licensed. In 2021, head number 45 is applying for this prestigious title. Darina by De Niro/Prince Thatch xx (breeder Hubert Ratermann, Alfhausen) was born in 2001 and she is also strong in heredity. She has already produced two licensed sons. One of them is Schneefuß by Sir Donnerhall, who was successful up to Prix St. Georges under the saddle of Susanne Mohr. He was first successful in sport before he was presented at the licensing in Verden at the age of ten. His full brother Kilian was licensed as a two-year-old in Verden in 2017 and moved to the Netherlands, where he passed his stallion performance test with balanced high scores. The third in the group of licensed sons out of Darina could be the head number 19 by Escamillo.

Successful Horses from the Verden Licensing

Many highly successful dressage horses entered the big stage for the first time at the Verden licensing. Destacado FRH by Desperados/Londonderry from the Schafhof Stud (breeder: Heinrich Gießelmann, Barver) moved from premium stallion to winning the 2016 Bundeschampionat and with Matthias-Alexander Rath in the saddle becoming Vice-World-Champion of Young Dressage Horses in 2018 and winner of the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal in 2020.  From the 2018 Verden licensing two well-known top-youngsters with a Fidertanz dam made their way to success.

Rod Laver by Rock Forever (breeder: Simone und Thomas Visser, Dentlein) and Damaschino by Danone (breeder: Wahler Family, Klosterhof Medingen). Rod Laver, who is owned by Frank Becker, won bronze at the Bundeschampionat of five-year-old dressage horses in 2021 with his rider Lena Stegemann and placed tenth at this year’s World Championships for Young Dressage Horses. The private stud stallion Damaschino placed fourth at this year’s World Championships of five-year-old Dressage Horses. The 2019 Bundeschampion and 2020 Vice-Bundeschampion did not receive a score below 9 in any of the evaluation criteria.

No. 56 by Secret/Sandro Hit/Carismo
(breeder: Gestüt W.M. GmbH, Visselhövede)
Successes at highest level is what the breeding stallions Gut Wettlkam’s D’Avie FRH by Don Juan de Hus/Londonderry (breeder: Dorothee Heitmüller, Nienburg) and Destano by Desperados/Brentano II (breeder: Heinrich Gießelmann, Barver) from the Gestüt Sprehe. D’Avie FRH, the double World Champion of Young Dressage Horses under Spaniard Severo Juardo Lopez, moved into the stable at Gut Wettelkam last year, and with his new rider Lisa Müller, he has reached to top class and is celebrating his first successes in international Grand Prix classes. The stallion was licensed in Verden in 2014, named premium stallion and left the stallion sales as a price record holder. Under Australian Simone Pearce the jet-black stallion Destano made it from the licencing up to Grand Prix.  In 2020 the pair broke the Australian record in the Grand Prix with 74.617 %, took a double victory at the CDI3* in Brünn and thus secured their ticket to the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympics. At the CHIO Aachen 2021 Pearce and Destano placed second in the Grand Prix Special just behind Jessica von Bredow-Werndl.
