British young professional dressage rider Dylan Deutrom and San Marco, competing at their first overseas international together as a pair, delivered an exciting double win amongst strong company at the 2022 CDI Opglabbeek on 30 March - 2 April 2022.
Small Tour Double
Dylan (24) rode two harmonious tests to win the Prix St Georges and Intermediaire I with scores of 71.422% and 71.617% respectively on San Marco, a 12-year old by Status Quo x Gribaldi gelding.
The pair bested a field of 25 competitors from eight different nations.
“I’m just over the moon,” said Dylan afterwards “I was really pleased with how he [San Marco] was. He was so settled at the show and he loves to compete.”
San Marco rose to prominence when he won the British Dressage Young Horse 6YO Championship in 2016 with the late Caroline Church, and he is now owned by Caroline’s son William Deans and her twin sister, Sarah Church.
Under 25 Mileage
Dylan, who is stable rider at Hicks Equestrian in Hampshire, was also well-placed in the CDIU25 classes with Matt Hicks and Sarah Warry’s 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding Sunlit Uplands (by Don Henrico x Hitchcock).
The pair achieved sixth place in both the U25 Grand Prix (68.504%) and the U25 Grand Prix Freestyle (73.042%).
“I’m so lucky having such wonderful horses to ride and train, and to be able to get to this sort of show,” said Dylan. “I’m lucky that I’m in this position and would like to thank Matt Hicks for all his support.”
Deutrom's international career began in 2018 when he was a young rider competing the KWPN bred Zorro (by Amsterdam x Inspekteur) at CDI's in Keysoe, Hagen and Hickstead.
