
Wim Zegwaard, a former owner of Dutch dressage horses and stallions, and a Dutch Fortune 500 listed entrepreneur has passed away on 12 October 2022. He was 78 years old.
Waste Management
Zegwaard made his fortune with his waste management company. He first started out by unclogging sewers before developing his company into an industrial waste management business.
According to Quotenet.nl, At the end of the 1980s he came into disrepute for illegally processing chemical waste. He was cleared of many charges, but for one he was sent to jail. He was released in 1997. Right before his release the European Commission of Human Rights ruled his conviction was wrongful and Zegwaard could claim compensation from the Dutch government.
Zegwaard personally financed the rightwing populist politician Pim Fortuyn after he was forced to leave the political party Leefbaar Nederland. Fortuyn was assassinated in 2002.
Zegwaard was a big real estate investor.
Luxury Lifestyle
Zegwaard flaunted his wealth and had an impressive car collection which included a Bugatti Veyron and he was the sole Dutchman to own a Maybach 62S Landaulet as well as a G650 Landaulet and several Das Haus cars.
In 2012 Zegwaard and his wife were victims of a home jacking in Rijswijk. They were locked in the basement for hours while thieves stole hundreds of thousands euro cash and a couple of million worth in luxury watches.
In 2020 he was listed on the Dutch Fortune 500 list with an estimated fortune of 115 million.
Dressage Horses
When Zegwaard was married to Vera, she instilled a love and interest in dressage horses in him. In the 1990s he imported some of the best miniature horses from all over the world and began his own miniature horse breeding "Stal Zegwaard" in Rijswijk, The Netherlands.
Vera Zegwaard competed Nine One One (by Wolfgang x Winckenburg) at the 2000 World Young Horse Championships and Limited Edition (by Farrington) at international small tour level.
At this 2005 KWPN Stallion licensing, he again bought the price highlight, Valeron (Sandro Hit x Houston), for 150,000 euro and later sold it to Bernadette Brune. Zegwaard also purchased Valencio (by Tangelo vd Zuuthoeve x Candy Boy) with Han van Blokland for 60,000 euro.
At the 2005 Equine Elite Auction he bought Laterna, a dark bay Swedish bred mare by Corrado, for 150,000 euro. At the 2009 Klosterhof Medingen auction he bought Drentano (by De Niro x Brentano) for 135,000 euro
He owned Seigneur (by Juventus x Zortin - later owned by Antonia Ramel) and co-owned dressage horses such as Anky van Grunsven's Salinero and Laurens van Lieren's Hexagon's Ollright.
Cancer
Wim Zegwaard was last married to Maureen.
A year ago he was diagnosed with cancer and on 12 October 2022 he passed away.
He leaves behind his wife, sons Arie and Roy, and daughter Patricia. Both sons work in their father's business, Patricia runs a rehab clinic in Rotterdam.
