Brazilian dressage team rider Victor Trielli Avila has made the decision to move to Germany to became an assistant rider at Hof Kasselmann in Hagen.
The 27-year old Avila will begin his job in Germany mid April.
Grown Up with Horses
Victor Avila has been around horses all his life. He took up riding when he was 7 and did his first working equitation competition at the of age. Five years later he rode in his first dressage competition and then committed to the discipline.
He was first coached by Valdeci Evaristo, followed by Rosangele Riskalla and remained under the supervision of his father, Orpheu Ávila.
Competition Sport
His international show debut was in 2012 as a 16-year old junior rider. He competed Lusitano Vencedor JB (by Nobel do Retiro out of Quanza LB) in the junior classes at several CDI's in his home town Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2013 he moved into the young riders' ranked and as of 2015 showed the horse in the senior small tour division. He has won national champion's title across the levels.
His move to Hagen is not Avila's first trip to Europe. He has already trained with Paulo Caetano in Portugal in 2013. He also spent time in Spain with Claudio Castilla Ruiz as well as in Germany with Dolf-Dietram Keller in 2016 through 2017.
"That time in Germany was a nice experience. I learnt a lot," Avila told Eurodressage. "
Going Pro
He started riding professionally for his own and got connected to Coudelaria Ilha Verde as of 2018.
That year he competed Signo dos Pinhais (by Zique x Icaro) and Al Pacino Comando SN (by Pantal Filhos do Vento x Laredo Top) at international small tour level. In 2019 the Bavarian warmblood Bruno Belissimo (by Belissimo M x Rubinstein) and Lusitano Corsario IGS (by Travesso FC x Zique) joined the ranks.
Corsario IGS took Avila into the Grand Prix arena in 2020 and the team gold and individual silver medal at the 2022 South American Games in Asuncion. In 2023 Avila was named first reserve for the Brazilian team for the 2023 Pan American Games. That year the rider made a desperate effort to clinch a second MER score and consolidate Brazil's team spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but ended up stuck with just one 67% score at a MER event, achieved mid December 2023 at the CDI 4* at Roca do Vouga.
Germany Bound
In order to really break through in international dressage sport, Avila realised he needs to be in Europe and has made the decision to head to Germany. He has found a job at Hof Kasselmann.
"I'm very happy and glad for this opportunity. I'm excited to start there," Avila told Eurodressage. "I'm still young, only 27. I can keep learning and keep growing. For the past two, three years I was thinking about it. My friends keep telling me I'm too far away in Brazil, so the best idea for a career is to change. In Brazil things are too small and too far away."
For Avila the move to Europe is not a short-term one. He seriously aims to grow as a rider and as he is a holder of an Italian passport, he doesn't need to be worried about the length of his stay.
"I want to stay in Germany long, maybe my whole career. You never know. This is the main idea," he said. "I know a lot of people in Europe so the door was open to find opportunities there. Germany is the best place to go in the moment for me to learn new things and gather new opportunities."
Victor will not be bringing any horses and will rely on Hof Kasselmann to supply him with new rides. "I want to be concentrated on their horses and do the best possible job there," he concluded.
