Dutch 5* dressage judge Francis Verbeek will be committing more to dressage judging in 2025 now that she is released from her duties as Spanish Team Trainer.
Career In and Out of the Saddle
The 68-year old Verbeek-Van Rooij is a former Dutch team rider. She competed at the 1978 World Championships in Goodwood, the 1980 Alternate Olympic Games in Goodwood and at the 1981 European Championships in Laxenburg aboard Ivar (by Doruto).
She has been a 5* dressage judge since 2009 and an FEI course director since 2016. Verbeek has officiated at every major international Championship, including European Championships across the divisions, World Cup Finals and the Olympic Games.
Spanish Team Trainer
Francis joined the technical staff of the Spanish Equestrian Federation (RFHE) at the start of 2022. She succeeded Spanish team trainer Rudolf Zeilinger and worked under the direction of RFHE Technical Dressage Director Miguel Jorda. Her position was originally called "team manager" but Verbeek took up the trainer's role.
With elections coming up for a new board at the Spanish Equestrian Federation (RFHE), the Spanish federation did not want to commit to a new contract in 2025. Verbeek therefore told the NF that she is no longer available for consideration.
"After 3 years, I have decided not to extend my contract as head coach with the Spanish federation," she said. "The ultimate sporting goal—qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics—has been achieved, and I was, and still am, incredibly proud of that accomplishment."
Back to Judging
"During this time, I also had the privilege of coaching many experienced combinations and up-and-coming talents to a higher level, which I am equally proud of," she said.
As of 2025 Verbeek will be back more in the judge's box.
"Due to an upcoming election, there is currently no clarity within the federation regarding its future technical direction. For this reason, I have decided to shift my focus back to judging and coaching after this successful period. I am truly looking forward to that next chapter."
Francis added, "I definitely want to judge more and I'll see what comes on my path. I want to enjoy our beautiful sport again and am looking forward to it."
