Negro, the stallion who founded its own distint bloodline with Dutch warmblood breeding and who was the foundation stallion for Van Olst Horses, has passed away.

He was 29 years old.

Novabor

Negro was by Ferro out of keur mare Fewrie (by Variant x Gondelier). He was bred by Wouter Borgers from Lunteren, The Netherlands.

He was born 5 March 1995 and originally named Novabor as the "bor" part of his name referred to the last name of the breeder, who passed right before Negro was born.

At the 2000 KWPN Stallion competition final
Negro was presented by the family of his deceased breeder at the stallion licensing and was not in the best shape. Gert-Jan van Olst wanted to buy Negro then, but the breeders declined the offer because of emotional reasons. However, after the licensing they ended up selling Negro to Hendrik van Tuyl, who sent him to the re-inspection where he was approved.

Negro did very well at his performance test and Van Olst first bought a 50% share of Negro during the performance test, later he became for 75% owner and after a while obtained full ownership.

Sport Career

Negro was trained and competed by Anne van Olst, who garnered much success with the black stallion when he was a young horse.

They won the KWPN Stallion Competition in 2000 and 2001. He won the title Young Star Stallion at the 2001 Zwolle International Stallion Show.  The duo was the best performing Dutch pair at the 2001 World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden, Germany, where they were 4th in the 6-year old final.

At the 2001 World Young Horse Championships
Negro then moved on to small tour level and competed four times of which he won three classes.  At his national Grand Prix debut he scored 72.50%. A severe injury abruptly ended the short sport career of this stallion.

Legacy

Negro continued to make his mark as a breeding stallion and became one of KWPN's most influential stallions of the past two decades alongside Jazz.

He has 2119 offspring registered with KWPN alone and 8 KWPN licensed sons. 122 of his daughters were named KWPN elite mare.

His first crops of offspring quickly made their mark in the 2000s with Tardi becoming the 2004 Danish Young Horse Champion, Valegro winning the British Young Horse champion under Carl Hester, and Troy becoming the 2006 Dutch Z1-level Champion.  In 2009 the KWPN breeding society proclaimed Negro Keur stallion.

However, over the years Negro proved that he was a true Grand Prix horse maker and the list of GP offspring is long: double Olympic champion Valegro (Charlotte Dujardin), Nintendo (Charlotte Jorst), Alfranco (Gilian Davison), Elegance (Beatriz Ferrer-Salat), Lars van de Hoenderheide (Charlotte Fry), Vorst (Anne van Olst), Unico G (Anne Marek), Numberto and Fendi T (Severo Jurado Lopez), Kjento (Charlotte Fry), Spargo (Theo Hanzon), Vainqueur (Jana Kun), Bufranco (Charlotte Heering), Taikoen (Anne van Olst), Bailey (Maxime van der Vlist), Innuendo (Sergio Bermejo Garcia), amongst many others.

In 2012 he was named preferent sire and in 2017 he became the KWPN Stallion of the Year

Greatly Missed

Negro was about to turn 30 years of age but owners Gert-Jan and Anne van Olst unfortunately had to say goodbye to their treasured stallion.

Negro and son Valegro
Anne announced the news on Facebook: "My heart is broken. Negro. one week   before your 30th birthday you, Gert-Jan and I decided,  that time had come. Out of love and respect we had to let you go.  Thank you for everything my love. You will be missed every second of the day, but your spirit will live on forever. Goodbye my love goodbye."
