Nature is never more able to evoke more dualistic feelings in a human being than in winter time. Blue sky, bright sun, dry; nature is fooling the fool who thinks he's turning the wheel he's turning on.
The moment you leave the cosy warmth of your house, you step into an inferno of frost. Toes, fingers and ears immediately twitch, while breath comes to life by revealing itself in its misty state.
An extra pair of tights have to protect your legs under your breeches, an extra pair of socks make your feet and calves feel swollen in those custom made leather boots, wearing gloves means slippery reins, that extra sweater is choking you, easpecially in the canter and your horse is annoyingly frisky which makes you scared.
Riding in winter times either raises excitement or anxiety with many riders. It is exciting because now it's the time to use that $100,000 indoor arena which otherwise is a mere decoration to your facility. Or, riding in winter drives you up the wall of anxiety because your horse gets so frisky that you are afraid to fall off.
Besides that comforting cup of hot chocolate or tea after your ride, winter is a drag. I hate putting blankets on my horse, I hate being cold because it gives me a headache, I hate being packed in ten layers of clothes. But, my pony looks so cute in her winter coat. The New Forest aspect in my New Forest Pony comes to life. Nevertheless, I hate the duality, the horror of winter!
