Anna Abbelen's career-starting Grand Prix horse Henny Hennessy has passed away. He was 21 years old.

Henny Hennessy was a 2003 born Hanoverian by Hofrat out of Awina (by Achenbach x Godewind). He was bred by Ulrich Bahlinger.

The dark bay began his show career as a 5-year old under Manuela Gorski. She competed him for three years up to S-level until the spring of 2010.

In 2011 Heiner Schiergen began showing him at small tour level and produced him to Grand Prix. They did their first GP tests in the early spring of 2012.

Abbelen, who was a long-time student of Schiergen, occasionally competed him too in those years. In 2013 she showed him at the CDI Stadl Paura in the junior tests.

Silke Abbelen-Mooren acquired Henny for her daughter Anna to ride and they became a steady pair as of 2015.

They made their international GP level debut in the Under 25 division at the 2015 CDI Vidauban and rode in that division for five years until the horse's last international in Hagen in July 2020.

In the course of those six years, Abbelen and Henny also focused on the national Piaff Forderpreis competitions. Internationally they contested the CDI's in Lier, Mannheim, Roosendaal, Riesenbeck, Sint-Truiden Mannheim and Aachen.

Retirement

In the spring of 2021 Anna announced Henny's retirement. He spent his time in the field at Anna's mum.

Henny unfortunately was put to sleep after he suddenly suffered from a bout of laminitis.

"He had the best life at mum's home," Abbelen told Eurodressage. "He fell asleep in peace without having to struggle a long time."
