The 4-year old Don Amour Waverley, the 5-year old Bellini Jiva, and the 6-year old Jin Xin du Montroyer became the winners of the 2021 French Young Horse Championships held in Fontainebleau, France, on 15 - 19 September 2021.

For the second consecutive year, the French Young Horse Nationals took place in Fontainebleau instead of its traditional venue at the national equestrian centre in Saumur.

The impact of the French owned breeding stallion Don Juan de Hus, who passed away in 2017, still thrives on the French dressage scene. Of the 46 finalists that competed in the three age categories, no less than 9 were sired by Don Juan de Hus!

4-YO: Don Amour Waverley

In the 4-year old division judged by Isabelle Judet, Bernard Maurel and Etienne Maire, professional young horse rider Jessica Michel-Botton grabbed the title on the British bred Oldenburg gelding Don Amour Waverley (by Don Juan de Hus x Sandro Hit). Bred by Sara Longworth and purchased by Michel as a foal after seeing him in an advertisement on Eurodressage, the bay scored 83.500 points in the first round for conformation, 88.000 in the second round under saddle and 87.413 points in the finals. He is no co-owned by Michel and CC Dressage Stable.

Michel-Botton also won the reserve title in the 4-year old division aboard Andreas Helgstrand's KWPN bred stallion My Toto VDT (by Toto Jr x Ferro). The black was bought by Helgstrand at the 2020 KWPN Licensing for 175,000 and in June 2021 was sent to France to be developed there by Michel. The stallion scored 82.50 for conformation, 87.20 in round one and 86.587 in the finals.

The bronze went to Victor Brua aboard his own Hanoverian bred Berlioz LH (by Bon Coeur x De Niro). He scored 77.50 for conformation, 87.60 in round one and 86.283 in the Finals.

5-YO: Bellini Jiva

In the 5-year old division Elsa Maulet, who is based in the stables of Isabelle de Roussy de Sales' Château de Thorens near Annecy and Geneva, piloted the Hanoverian gelding Bellini Jiva (by Benicio x Scolari) to victory. Bred by Ingo Pape in Germany, the gelding scored 78.500 for conformation, 80.80 in the first round and a winning 80.591 points in the Finals.

The reserve title went to Jessica Michel Botton on Philippe Jung's Oldenburg bred Maximus HP du Winckel (by Morricone x Florencio), who won the 4-year old title last year. The combination earned 82.00 points in the conformation class, 80.20 points in the first round and placed second in the finals with 80.364 points.

Alizee Roussel and Australian Rebecca Rooke's Oldenburg mare Muschamp's Queen OLD (by Quaterbold du Payrol x Herzruf) landed third place. They got 78.500 points in the conformation round, 79.600 in the first round and 79.500 in the finals for third place.

6-YO: Jin Xin du Montroyer

Victor Brua on Jin Xin du Montroyer
Victor Brua picked up his second medal of the weekend, this time a gold one, in the 6-year old division, which he won aboard the Belgian SBS registered Jin Xin du Montroyer (by Belantis x Weltmeyer), bred by Lionel Guenin. The mare earned 9 for walk, 8.3 for trot, 8.5 for canter, 7.9 for submission and 8.4 for perspective to total a winning 84.20 points for the national title.

Elodie Muller and the Belgian warmblood mare Petunia van Blommerschot (by Finest x Saros van 't Gestelhof) earned silver with 81.80 points. This mare received 8.3 for walk, 8.4 for trot, 8.0 for canter, 8 for submission and 8.2 for perspective.

Christelle Marie and François Delsaux' KWPN gelding Kayden (by Desperado x Uphill) were good for bronze with 80.0 points. This horse got 8.5 for walk, 8 for trot and canter, 7.6 for submission and 7.9 for perspective.

The 6-year old division brought some interesting surprises as France's two participants at the World Young Horse Championships in Verden, could not return home with a medal. They were fourth (Djembe de Hus) and fifth (Parodie ter Dolen). The final was judged by Jean Michel Roudier, Marietta Almasy and Bernard Maurel.
