Swedish eventing rider gone dressage, Wynja Eriksdotter Rubin, claimed a double victory in the young riders' division at the 2024 CDI Sint-Truiden on 5 - 7 April 2024. While the YR team championship test was won by German Luca Gartmann, Wynja rose from a third place to winning twice in the individual and concluding freestyle on Sunday.
The 20-year old Wynja is no newcomer to the scene, having made her international show debut back in 2017 on pony Wacos Rache. She combines a career in dressage sport with eventing, having shown Wacos Rache as well as ponies Proteus and Dushanbe at CCI-P 1* level and horses Fly Away van de N.Ranch (by Quidam's Rubin x Voltaire) and Hakunamatata (by Cavallieri xx x Tarino) in the CCI 2* level.
Between 2020 and 2022 it was all about eventing in Wynja's rider life, representing Sweden at the 2021 European Junior Eventing Championships in Segersjo. Since 2023 she has been on double duty as El Diablo was competed at Young Riders level, while she took Hakunamata to the 2023 European Young Riders Eventing Championships and Hurricane Coquita (by Contant Q x For Feeling) to the 2023 World Young Horse Eventing Championships in Lion d'Angers.
Also in 2024 Wynja keeps a busy schedule in both disciplines, now having risen to CCI 4* level with her Belgian warmblood Fly Away van de N.Ranch. On the 15-year old KWPN gelding El Diablo (by Zenon x Krack C) she already won the team test at the CDI Lier in February, and now won two more trophies in Sint-Truiden. Belgian shows become her.
After a third place in the team test (70.490%), she won the individual with 70.735% and the Kur with 72.733%. "Elmo - you’re out of this world," said a visibly moved Wynja, who trains with Elin Aspnas. "He really danced his hooves off today and brought home the win with a new personal best. Still can’t believe it and I’m just so happy to have a horse like him."
German Luca Elina Gartmann does not yet have the most international experience, having competed her temperamental red head Quater's Diamond, a 13-year old Brandenburger by Quaterback x Diamond Hit), in only two CDI's before, both in Troisdorf. This time her trainer Warwick McLean followed her to Sint-Truiden and the Belgian start paid off as the pair won the team championship test with 71.520% but could not maintain consistency. She was 8th in the individual (67.451%) and 7th in the Kur (68.750%).
Danish Lea Andreassen Torabi and the 14-year old Swedish warmblood Bergakras Amaranth (by Ampere x Troll) were a fighting force throughout the weekend, placing second in the team test (70.931%) and individual (69.755%) and third in the Kur (71.675%).
