Monarca do Lis, a Portuguese Junior Riders Team horse, has passed away on 28 October 2024. The 8-year old Lusitano succumbed to colic.
Monarca do Lis was by Gladiador do Lis out of Fibrosa do Lis (by Peralta Pinha x Guadalquivir). He was bred at Coudelaria Flor do Lis.
Leonor Coelho
The 8-year old Lusitano claimed fame under Portuguese children and junior rider Leonor Coelho, who were matched in May 2023.
The pair made its international debut in 2023 at the CDI Alter do Chao in the children division, placing second and first. With another two wins at the CDI Lezirias, they were nominated on the Portuguese team for the 2023 European Children Championships in Kronberg, where they placed 20th in the team competition test with 73.950%. They concluded the year winning the 2023 Portuguese Children Championships.
In 2024 they moved up to junior level and campaigned in Cascais, Alter, and Lezirias before heading to the 2024 European Junior Riders Championships in Opglabbeek (BEL), where they unfortunately were rung out in the team test.
Two months later in September they returned to the CDI arena in Esposende, where they were second in the junior individual test and third in the Kur. The CDI counted as the Portuguese Junior Riders Championships, in which they finished fourth.
Colic
Unfortunately Monarca do Lis' story came to a sudden end when the Lusitano suffered from a severe colic attack on Monday 28 October 2024.
"He was been quickly assisted by their veterinarian Bruno Miranda and his team that decided to go for an operation with a very reserved prognosis," Leonor's father Bruno Coelho told Eurodressage. "After the operation Monarca do Lis didn’t recover."
