Canadian stallion owner MJ Proulx has boosted her growing line-up of imported Dutch warmblood stallions with a new sire for the 2025 breeding season: Giovanni.
Giovanni is a 13-year old KWPN stallion by Chippendale out of elite sport mare Zarava (by Scandic x Negro). He is bred by Cees van Etten and was originally named Garava.
KWPN and Oldenburg Licensed
The handsome liver chestnut stallion was licensed at the 2014 KWPN Stallion Licensing and moved on to became the high scorer of the 2014 KWPN spring stallion performance test. He scored 86 points.
The KWPN Stallion Licensing Committee described him as, "an honest and reliable stallion with a very good temperament. The stallion is very willing to work. The walk is clear in rhythm with good ground cover. The trot is expressive, has good ground cover and the hind legs come powerfully under the body. The canter is uphill, very powerful with very good carriage and jump. Giovanni moves with good to very good elasticity and with good to very good self-carriage and balance."
The Oldenburg society approved Giovani in 2014 following these strong 70-day performance test results.
Young Horse Success
Franka competed him up to small tour level in The Netherlands. They were the runners-up in the 2019 VHO Trophy which is held annually at the KWPN Stallion Licensing in 's Hertogenbosch.
In 2020 Giovanni was sent to Spanish Olympian Severo Jurado Lopez in Denmark to be produced to Grand Prix level. He reached Grand Prix but sustained an injury. Although rehabilitated he was unable to continue competing at the highest levels.
Performance Bloodlines
With a strong focus on his sport career, Giovanni has sired 63 offspring so far. His most successful progeny in sport has already reached small tour level. They are Kiki (Dennesy Rogers, USA), Kobold Spring SSS (Zuzana Hradilova, CZE), Leonardo Decaprio (Mascha Van Es, NED), Kaptain Jack V.O.D. (Tessa Van Os, NED), L’Espoir de Mystique (Anne Van Nistelrooij, NED), Lorava (Janneke Van Riet), and Great Leo (Alisa Glinka, MDA).
Standing at Stud in Canada
The WFFS negative stallion will now continue his career as a breeding stallion at MJ Proulx' Canadream Farm.
I have always been impressed by Giovanni’s canter and powerful movement, so when Ingrid (Malan) contacted me about buying him, I didn’t hesitate," Proulx told Eurodressage. "His superior rideability, incredible canter, ability for collection and proven performance make him an outstanding addition to my breeding programme."
