Eighty-two colts have been selected for the second phase of the 2025 KWPN Stallion Licensing in 's Hertogenbosch on 29 January - 1 February 2024.

The KWPN stallion licensing committee, chaired by Bart Bax, held its "first phase" or the "pre-selection" at the KWPN headquarters in Ermelo on five days starting on 9 December 2024.

Day one of the pre-selection was for colts sired by "foreign" stallions. Sire Total McLaren did best with three offspring selected for the next round. On day two it was older sire Bordeaux who stood out with three sons selected. On the third day it was Oldenburg sire For Romance who had three sons picks, while the highly popular Glamourdale (who sired 76 KWPN colts in 2022) four were selected.

Las Vegas

On day four the offspring of the best represented sires - Las Vegas and Jameson - were presented. Initially it was announced that both had 14 sons entered for the first phase, but 16 Las Vegas' sons showed up in the end and he persevered with no less than 8 sons through to the next round.

Jameson had four colts entered but only two appeared. Both were accepted. This was his third crop of foals and in 2022 86 colts were KWPN registered so statistically this is a low yield.

This is the second crop of Las Vegas offspring. In 2021 117 colts were born. Las Vegas is big himself and breeds a lot of size. All of the selected colts stand around 170 cm and one is even 1.77 m, Horses.nl reported. "The is not the height that we want for a 3-year old but we give the colt the benefit of the doubt," Bax told Horses.nl.

Santiano

On the final day of selecting, the colts of the young sires were presented and it was the Danish warmblood bred Santiano (by Sezuan x Romanov) that stood out the most with five offspring selected. Santiano had 125 colts KWPN registered in 2022. Percentage-wise McLaren did even better as he had four sons selected out of a crop of 55 colts KWPN registered in 2022.

"That Santiano needs a mare with blood became obvious today," Bart Bax told Horses.nl. "He doesn't make them noble. It can be that breeders in the first year didn't know that he required a noble mare for this stallion. You notice those things when you see the horse in real life." Santiano was approved in the corona year when the licensing was behind closed doors (but streamed live).

In this group of young colts the offspring of Nacho, Next Level and Mister Diamond all got rejected.

The total selected colts was brought to 82 with one more selection day to go on 23 December with the "late pre-selection" for those colts who didn't make it on the regular days for certain reasons. Approximately 10 to 20 colts will be viewed on that day.
