Jutta Langels, the founding mother of Trakehner brood farm and stallion station Gestüt Hämelschenburg, has passed away on 9 July 2025. She was 84 years old.
Brood Farm
Jutta and her husband Otto founded Gestut Hämelschenburg in 1962. Located in Emmerthal in the Weserbergland near Hanover with the castle Hämelschenburg in the backdrop, Langels' yard is a working farm which got extended with a horse breeding programme. Their programme relied on 12 to 13 exceptional mares.
Jutta and Otto Langels acquired their first Trakehner broodmares aided by their lessor, Victoria von Klencke, mistress of Hämelschenburg, in the decision-making, as she spent her youth in the East Prussian district town of Allenstein, where the Trakehner originates. Langels' first mares were the chestnut mare Vilja (by Julmond) and Zauberlied (by Lateran x Humboldt).
The close proximity to the Webelsgrund Stud and the close friendship with the Bähre family also influenced the further development of the Hämelschenburg breeding programme. The breeding mentor in Webelsgrund was Georgenburg's former State Stud Master Dr. Martin Heling, who shared his wealth of knowledge with Jutta and Otto Langels.
Mare Thirza (by Karon x Falke) became Jutta's pride and joy of her personal breeding program. Thirza produced 11 foals in 11 years, including reserve champion Trocadero (by Enrico Caruso).
Stallion Station
As of 1967 they began standing stallions at stud.
Langels bred, reared or owned no less than 64 licensed stallion. Six of them were licensing champions (Santiago, Kostolany, Gribaldi, Kastellano, Songline and His Moment), four were reserve champion (Samurai, Trocadero, Mozart, High Motion), and many became premium stallion (Kassiber, Karon, Silvermoon, Summertime, Shavalou, Saint Cyr, and Sutherland). Also foundation Trakehner stallions Ibikus once had his home in Hämelschenburg.
Winding Down
Otto Langels managed the 140-hectare farm, which focused on the cultivation of grain, root crops, and vegetables, until 1997.
Over 40 years, Jutta and Otto made a fundamental contribution to Trakehner breeding. They have handed over the breeding, rearing, and training to their daughters Beate and Marion, while son Bernhard runs a second breeding facility under the "Flagship Hämelschenburg" in Schäplitz. Jutta and Otto continued to provide advice and support to their children.
Jutta passed away after a long period of illness.
