The 3-year old Esperanzo Malleret PS, the 4-year old Fiadora, the 5-year old Figari Gold, and the 6-year old Bellini Jiva were the winners of their respective divisions at the 2022 French Young Horse Championships in Saumur, France, on 30 September - 2 October 2022.
Complex System
The French Young Horse Nationals are hosted by the Societe Hippique Française (SHF) and were held for ponies and horses. They work with a very complex system of parallel divisions: the "Cycle Classique" classes and the "Cycle Libre" classes. Entries depend on the amateur or professional licence of the rider, but some riders can compete in both divisions nonetheless.
The 3-year old division then falls under the direction of France Dressage, a different organisation and their 3-year old Championship format consists of numerous different classes: 3-year olds under saddle, 3-year olds in freedom, split up between mares & geldings and stallions bred in France (can be registered with a foreign studbook), and then there is a 3-year old criterium class, exclusively for horses bred outside of France.
3-YO: Esperanzo Malleret PS, Betty Boop du Neuhof,
In the 3-year old criterium class for horses born outside of France, it was the French dressage stud Haras de Malleret that wielded the axe of power, taking the gold and silver medal. The class was judged by Marian Dorresteijn, Jesper Holsten Hansen and Marc Besnainou. The champion was the Oldenburg Esperanzo Malleret PS (by Escamillo x Zack), bred by Paul Schockemohle and owned by Haras de Malleret. He scored 8.5 for walk, 9 for trot, 8.5 for canter to finish on a winning total of 87.50 points. The reserve champion's title went to First Moon de Malleret, an Oldenburg by Furstenball x Diamond Hit, also bred by Paul Schockemöhle and owned by Malleret. This horse scored 8 for walk, and 8.5 for trot and canter to finish second on 83.75 points. The third place was for the Hanoverian For Ever Dream (by For Romance x Rubinio NRW), who scored 7.5 for walk and 8 for trot and canter to finish on 78.75 points.
In the 3-year old mares and geldings under saddle class, it was the DSP registered mare Betty Boop du Neuhof (by Baron x Furstenball) that led the ranking with 88.75 points. She is bred by Melanie Gutzwiller and owned by Elevage du Neuhof. Xavier Marie's Daredevil de Hus (by Don Juan de Hus x Rubin Royal) placed second with 86.25 points, while Aleijo's Gucci de Hus (by Governor x Belissimo M) was third with 82.50 points. The class was judged by Etienne Marie, Jesper Holsten Hansen and Marc Besnainou.
In the 3-year old stallions under saddle class, the Selle Français registered Jazzario Top (by ZZ Top x Sydney) moved into the winner's circle with 81.25 points. He is bred by Olivia Jane Lacroix and owned by Nais Roussel. The runner-up was Attie Eisma's Jetset de Saint Val, a Selle Français by Emotion de Saint Val x Florencio, with 80.00 points. Philip Lipizzan's Saeta de Philip, a Rhinelander stallion by Sir Sandro x Maesto Beja II, tied in second place with 80.00 points. The class was judged by Marietta Almasy, Marian Dorresteijn, and Jesper Holt Hansen.
4-YO: Fiadora
The 4-year old division was won by French professional Grand Prix team rider Maxime Collard aboard the Hanoverian mare Fiadora (by Fursten-Look x Valentino). The pair scored a whopping 93.20% in the finals and with 16.3 points for conformation, they totalled 91.67 points for the victory. Fiadora was purchased for 218,000 euro in the 2022 Hanoverian January Online auction and she straight away went into training with Collard under the supervision of French judge and former international rider Marietta Almasy. Fiadora is bred by Michael Luhs in Germany.
2012 French Olympian Jessica Michel Botton and her own Hanoverian stallion So Secret (by Secret x Hohenstein) were the reserve champions with an 85.80% finals' score, 16.1 for conformation and a total of 85.11% to place second for silver. So Secret is bred by Peter Bosch.
French Grand Prix rider Charlotte Chalvignac and the Hanoverian First Love Majishan (by Franziskus x Soliman de Hus) were third for bronze with 85.02% points. The mare earned 86.00% in the finals and got 15.7 for conformation. Bred by ZG Meyer in Germany, the chestnut First Love sold to France in the 2021 Westfalian Autumn Elite Auction for 18,500 euro
