Children rider Murakoshi, junior rider Sato, and young rider Yurie Yoshida became the winners of the 2023 Japanese youth riders championships, which were held at the Gotemba City Equestrian Sports Center in Gotemba on 24 - 26 September 2023.

The youth Nationals consisted of two rounds per division with the scores totalled to decide on the final ranking. For the juniors and young riders the tests that counted were the individual and the Kur to Music. The Japanese age classes do not follow the FEI age rules. The Young Riders' division does not end at age 21, as with the FEI, but can include 22-year olds (born 2001).

Young Rider Yurie Yoshida on Top

The 22-year old Yurie Yoshida, who has been competing in Europe in the Under 25 division and senior small tour, was still eligible to ride the Young Riders Championships in Japan and won the national title. After scoring bronze in 2022 at age 21, Yurie now grabbed gold on Grandeur, the 12-year old KWPN gelding by Charmeur x Krack C, previously shown by Italian Beatrice Arturi. Yoshida scored 70.147% in the individual test and 72.890% in the Kur.

"I'm so happy and relieved," Yoshida took to Instagram. "It was my final year as a young riders. I'll continue to do my best to achieve my objectives."

The silver went to Mai Miyamoto aboard the 21-year old Trakehner bred Schwalbenmelodie (by Hohenstein). The horse, who had a show career previously in Poland, before selling to Japan, scored 67,010% in the individual test and 69,330% in the Kur. The 22-year old Miyamoto has been showing the Trakehner since 2016. Last year they were 10th in the Young Riders Championships.

The bronze was for the 21-year old Kobe based Maya Tahara aboard Ryutou. She posted 66,127% and 69,090% for a third place overall. Tahara was the 2020 Japanese Junior Riders Champion on a horse named History, which piloted Shigehiro Sato this year to the 2023 Japanese Junior Champion's title.
