German Lisa Breimann has to say goodbye to her leading horse Aida Luna. The mare that took her from juniors to Grand Prix passed away in September.

Aida Luna was an 18-year old Oldenburg mare by Rousseau out of Aida (by Royal Angelo I x Attraktiv x Romadour II). She was bred by Gerhard Ehmann.

Esther Lobeck

As a 3-year old mare Aida Luna finished 8th in the brilliant ring at the 2009 Oldenburg Elite Mare Show in Rastede.

Florine Kienbaum bought the mare at one of the auctions the breeder held annually at his yard in Ladbergen. Aida Luna was not the easiest as a youngster, being girthy, so she was trained by Esther Lobeck, who first competed her as a 5-year old in 2011. Lobeck worked together with Kienbaum.

Lobeck produced her gradually up the levels for the next two years and showed her up to M-level at regional shows.

Lisa Breimann

Breimann bought Aida Luna and premiered her in the show ring  just days after Lobeck had last shown her in Dortmund-Asseln in June 2013.

The 16-year old Breimann was a junior then and with Aida Luna she progressed all the way to Grand Prix level. She trained with Caro Roost and Oliver Oelrich along the way.

The pair made its international show debut at the 2015 CDI Darmstadt at junior level and in 2016 moved to Young Riders level.  Their busiest international years were in 2017 and 2018 with CDI starts in Joosland, Hagen, Exloo, Lier, and Hagen. In 2017 they became squad listed and long-listed for team selection. Both years they were invited to the German team selection trial in Hagen for the European Young Riders Championships but did not make the cut.

They were 5th at the 2016 German Young Riders Championships, 5th  in 2017, and 7th in 2018.

Moving to Grand Prix

A year after their last CDI in Exloo they returned at the same venue in October 2019 as a senior pair competing in the small tour. After that a three-year break from international showing following only to make one more come back as an Under 25 rider at the CDI Troisdorf in May 2022. It was their last CDI.

Nationally Breimann and Aida Luna rode on the 2021 Piaff Forderpreis circuit, in 2022 they were not selected for the circuit. They continued to compete at regional and national shows in Germany to gain miles and experience.

The pair's last show was in June 2024 in a short Grand Prix test at the local show in Oer-Erkenschwick.

Untimely Passing

Unfortunately Aida Luna passed away in September after a severe bout of colic.

"Despite all veterinary measures we had to let her go with a heavy heart," Lisa told Eurodressage. "It was a very sad loss for our family. Aida was an exceptional horse for me. She had been with me since she was 7 years old, she was my absolute favorite horse and an important part of our family."

Breimann is grateful for the love and success the mare brought her over the years.

"I started with her in the Junior Tour and was able to grow with her over the years into the Young Rider Tour, into the U25 age group and into Grand Prix sport, achieving numerous national and international successes," she said. "To experience all this with a horse is something very special. Aida Luna has been in top condition all these years and brought a smile to my face every day. Her tireless willingness to work and her unique character made her a one-of-a-kind companion. Our relationship was something very special and is irreplaceable.

A Future with Young Horses

Lisa will continue her competitive career with young horses. She has been showing Zara, a 5-year old Westfalian mare by Zoom x Florencio x Longchamp, bred by Bernhard Deitert.

"I am devoting myself to my young horses," said Breimann who works full-time as a management consultant. "Each of these horses needs its own time, patience and an individual plan. I learned patience and individual training from Aida. Despite the time challenge, riding remains a big part of my life. I am now looking forward to going on a journey together with my promising young horses."
