Sophie Anne Maria Named 2025 KWPN Mare Champion

The black Sophie Anne Marie was named the champion of the 2025 KWPN Mare Championships in Ermelo, the Netherlands, on 1 August 2025.

Sophie Anne Maria bred and owned owned by Judith Ribbels and Patrick Reesink from Eibergen came, saw, and conquered. This black mare by For Romance out of elite mare Nanny McPhee (by Vitalis x Sorento) had scored 85/90 points at the inspection and was already named East Regional Champion. Now she added the national champion's title to her tally.

"Sophie Anne Maria is a magnificent mare, with an expressive forehand and a lot of allure. She possesses three fantastic basic gaits and doesn't need speed. Time and again, she impresses with her ease, self-carriage, and good balance in movement," said judge Luuk Smetsers.

Breeder and owner Judith Ribbels was on cloud nine: "Fantastic! A few years ago, we also had the National Mare champion, but she wasn't bred by us. This is even more special!"

Sarai Verdoni

Sarai Verdoni (by Kjento out of Toto Jr) was named the reserve champion. She is bred by NMH van Dommelen of Verdoni stables in Borculo, The Netherlands.

"A sharp, athletic mare with beautiful lines," said Smetsers. "In trot, she's like a machine with many gears; she stands out with her ease, ability to change gears, and powerful hind legs."

Showgirl

The third place was for Showgirl, a filly by Next Level out of Mimi Magnifique (by Apache), bred by Patty Zwang from Dordrecht. Just like the NMK champion, she already scored a significant 85/90 at the studbook inspection.

"This is a well-bred mare who can change gears fantastically in trot and moves with excellent leg technique," said Smetsers.
