2023 Danish Junior/Young Riders Championships

Junior rider Sophia Obel Jorgensen and young rider Frederikke Gram Jacobsen became the winners of the 2023 Danish Junior and Young Riders Championships held in Vallensbak, Denmark, on Whitsunday weekend, 28 - 29 May 2023.

The Danish youth riders contest their national championships totally separate from the Danish Championships for U25 riders and seniors in Uggerhalne on 1 - 4 June 2023. These championships are a team observation moment in the lead-up to the 2022 European Championships later this summer.

Junior Riders: Sophia Obel on Repeat

Twenty-six combinations were entered and the top 15 of the first round moved to the freestyle finals on Monday.

Last year's champion, Sophia Obel Jorgensen, was on repeat and reclaimed her title but this year aboard a new ride, the 7-year old Danish bred Askari Pilekaer (by Apache x Florestan) following the sudden passing of her number one, Briliant, after winning Kur gold at the 2022 European Junior Championships. Obel and Askari won the first round with 72.703% and placed second in the freestyle with 74.725% to finish first overall for the gold medal.

"I am so proud and grateful for this young man! Only 7 years old and he wins his very first Danish championship," Obel took to Instagram. "It was so special to ride Brilliant's freestyle on him and I'm sure Brilliant helped us through the whole test."

Cornelia Munch Sinding successfully moved from ponies to junior level on horses and finished with silver. Aboard the 16-year old Lord Hamilton (by Lord Loxley x Don Primero) she was second in the first round with 72.234% and third in the freestyle (74.475%) to place second overall.

Josephine Gert Nielsen and the 8-year old grey gelding Bravio Bianco (by Belantis x De Niro) was fourth in the first round (71.540%) and won the freestyle (74.800%) and thereby landed on the third step of the podium for bronze.

Young Riders: Frederikke Gram Jacobsen

Twenty-seven young riders appeared at the starting line and the best 15 of the Prix St Georges (YR team test) moved onwards to the freestyle finals. Remarkably absent from the Nationals was team rider Alexander Yde Helgstrand with Belantis.

Long-time team member Frederikke Gram Jacobsen and her 13-year old Danish mare Ryvangs Zafina (by Zack x Come Back II) was in charge and won both rounds, scoring 75.474% in the Prix St Georges and 79.100% in the freestyle.

Kristian Würtz Green and the 11-year old Danish bred Bovbjergs Zhivago (by Romanov x Don Schufro) followed in the distance and placed second overall. He was second in the Prix St Georges (72.237%) and second in the Kur (77.375%).

A new face moved onto the podium to collect the bronze: Pernille Korsgaard Madsen aboard the 10-year old Swedish warmblood Napoli TH (by Floricello x Flemmingh). She was fourth in the first round (70.711%) and fifth in the freestyle (72.450%) but her overall total ranked her third.

The race for bronze was a tough one as the fourth, fifth, and sixth placed pair all scored an overall total of 142.000 points, with only a fraction behind the comma difference between those spots. Johanne Amby Ubbesen, Laura Rohmann, and Margaretha Rosenkilde are knocking at the door.
